Obviously Dinosaur Sanctuary was always fated to be, at best, the 2nd best piece of fiction about a dinosaur theme park, but even so this book is really great. The dinosaurs featured are pretty accurately portrayed; lining up well with our current paleontologic information.

I would have thought that there are many other similar theropods that could have been chosen as a stand-in for Troodon in that chapter. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Disaster Dominoes: The incident in 2006 where an Allosaurus almost escaped was only possible due to a number mistakes that added up.The Edmontosaurus that appears in an Imagine Spot in Chapter 11 is shown without the row of raised scales along its back, as we now know they would have had based on some exceptionally well-preserved specimens. While it's focused on dinosaurs, I think one of the most eye-opening things about this volume is an inside look into a zookeeper's life. But with Dinoland having been struggling for so long with insufficient staff and funding to take care of its 72 individual dinosaurs (plus pterosaurs and marine reptiles), Suzume will have a lot of work cut out for her. In that sense, Dinosaur Sanctuary is rather reminiscent of the anime series The Aquatope on White Sand that aired in Fall 2021.

I greatly appreciate that they brought on a scientist to ensure as much accuracy as possible, and that they gave them the chance to add their own little notes between chapters.

There is a little more going on too, as is hinted at by Suzume’s connection to her late father and an “incident’ spoken of in hushed tones, but that revelation will apparently have to wait for future volumes.

I believe the Japanese editions are up to volume five already, so I should have plenty more to look forward to at least. While I have enjoyed several dinosaur-centered comics before, they very often skew towards being quite violent, and presenting dinosaurs as monsters.It shows the harsh realities of zoos as entertainment, which is actually quite typical of the book; while it is very much set in a zoo, it’s not shy to show the difficulties of keeping animals in captivity, for both the animals and the human keepers. The art is great, I wasn't expecting a lot given I haven't read the author before, but it was lovely and the dinosaurs look sick.

For example one chapter featured Troodon – a genus based only on teeth fragments, and considered to be potentially invalid . That’s exactly what I’d always hoped Michael Crichton’s original novel would depict when I first cracked it open waaaaay back in 1990. Characters who are veteran Dino-keepers and Dino-doctors are constantly making observations about how their charges move, sit, and behave. We have some great characters with the potential to meet more, and some interesting ideas about what might come from trying to help the park perform better.

Noodle Incident: The 2006 incident that killed public interest in dinosaurs remains one of these for the first few chapters. It's too easy to portray dinosaurs as just "terrible lizards" when there's so much more too them than just that, as is the case with any living creature.
