Thank you Huw for a very comprehensive review with so many detailed photos from different perspectives.Unfortunately, LEGO can’t slap a “This is going to be really hard to build” tag on the box, and they had to work retroactively. The well is a nice little touch to the set, but I can’t help but think that something is off about it. Huw As an architect, I'm impressed by your concern for the structural stability of the roof and its central support!

The box features the new 18+ packaging design with a 151 Sand Green brick-built stripe along the bottom of the box. The announcement brought about the same child-like glee I felt last year with the announcement of Pirates of Barracuda Bay. I generally like both, which I feel look better than the classic breastplate piece because of how they bulk up the shoulders (which in my opinion helps compensate a little better for the extra height a neck accessory adds to a figure's proportions, even if it's less "realistic"). While I’m definitely annoyed by vertical post on the third floor and the blue roof, both of these issues are relatively minor and can be easily fixed if you decide to modify the set.However, given the advanced builder level and lack of nostalgic value, I rate the KFOL score at 90%.

The American Black Bear is native to North America, but there's also an Asian Black Bear (lives mostly in mainland SE Asia), the Sun Bear (lives in SE Asia), the Sloth Bear (lives mostly in India), and the Spectacled Bear (lives in the Andes Mountain range). Likewise, the textures and colors of the original model's stone walls were repeated across the entire lower level, rather than showing specific masonry techniques or signs of weathering on different areas of the wall.

It may be the largest castle-themed set to date, but the colours and design aesthetics mean it won’t look too odd next to the rest of your collection, and nor would it contrast too heavily with any forthcoming Castle line that may (or may not) be in the works – particularly given a wider theme would likely need to appeal to a younger subset of fans. Outside, we see continued progress on the walls, and the addition of an awning which covers the forge. And then there are the small touches that really bring the set to life: the bellows that trigger the light brick in the blacksmith’s forge; the well, squash garden and foliage that present just a hint at the surrounding landscape; and the knights travelling by wagon to collect their supplies. If you look at just large sets with similar piece counts, like the modular buildings, my average ratio is 408:1. I do look forward to seeing someone mod it to include red terracotta tiles though, as that could look fantastic.

There are some missing tiles where you can see exposed “wood” and then more “moss” on the bottom edge of the roof. It includes a blacksmith, archer and 2 Black Falcon Knights and a 3-level building with a removable roof, an apple tree and a well. Yes, the floor plates are slightly off colour to the rest of the walls but you don't really notice that, they blend in really well. I found the yellow outlines in the instructions caused me as much confusion as clarity in where the parts to be added should go. In this case, that disappointing presentation also extends to the instructions, which feature an oddly-composed shot of the final set that slices off the very top of the roof.

The significance to the rucksack and compass, as stated in the designer video, is that it's a nod to the fan designer who likes to go hiking, and therefore doesn't have any relevance to the historical accuracy of the set as a whole.
