About this deal

I adored this story the first time around, and on re-reading, my opinion is confirmed that this is another example of brilliant writing by Emma Carroll. I would highly recommend this book to a person who likes adventures and mysteries, and unexpected endings. There, Olive has to solve a mystery of her own: a strange coded letter holding very important information which seems to link her sister (Sukie) with Devon and to something important and impossibly dangerous. From the very first few pages, this story is full of gripping adventure, mystery and is at times, breathtaking. The characters and their rapport are genuine and gently handled, painted with a full sense of each of every person so that the reader really knows who they are.

We weren't even meant to be outside, not in a blackout, and definitely not when German bombs had been falling on London all month like pennies from a jar. We have been learning about the war at school so it made sense to me but it might have some things that are hard to follow for younger children. Suffice to say, it contains plenty of twists and turns to keep you engrossed, as Olive tries to decode a mysterious note she has found in the pocket of the coat that her sister was wearing on the night she vanished. My favourite part was when they found a suitcase from one of the people that her sister was trying to save. She has also worked as a news reporter, an avocado picker and the person who punches holes into filofax paper.This book is about a brother and sister, Cliff and Olive, who are evacuated from London to Budmouth Point during the Second World War.

The story serves as a poignant and timely reminder that understanding, respect and compassion can defeat prejudice and bigotry. I really liked Letters From The Lighthouse because it was a sad story but in a way happy because in the the end they have a happy and enthusiastic life. I found the characters really interesting and there were some really exciting twists and turns but at times I found the plot a little bit confusing!This book has shown me what life was like during WW2, what people did and the sacrifices they had to make.
