I think to fully enjoy this book you have to be an aspiring professional bodybuilder. If you're like me and you just work out for general health, whole sections of this book will by dry in the extreme. Arnold dedicates probably half of the book to the history of bodybuilding, to how to compete in bodybuilding, and on and on. It's mind-numbing stuff unless you're into it

But for a book about bodybuilding this is weirdly light on technique. Deadlift gets a couple of sentences and pictures - deadlifts! The text does little to explain how to do any of the exercises, nor does it expand upon the mental aspect, e.g. thinking about driving your heels into the ground when raising the bar. Nor does it really help you decide between which of the many many isolation movements it outlines. For example, both preacher and concentration curls are a great bicep isolation, so it would have been nice to see them compared and contrasted and the pros and cons of doing one over the other. From elite bodybuilding competitors to gymnasts, from golfers to fitness gurus, anyone who works out with weights must own this book -- a book that only Arnold Schwarzenegger could write, a book that has earned its reputation as "the bible of bodybuilding." The Arnold workout split is an advanced routine suitable for late intermediate and advanced lifters who want to gain muscle as fast as humanly possible. If you’re someone who prefers shorter, more frequent workouts, and you’re able to train on a consistent basis 5-6 days a week, the Arnold Split can work very well.

Perhaps the most interesting exercises in Bodybuilding for Men are the verbal contortions Arnold (and/or his co-author Bill Dobbins) must undertake to answer the question "What is Fitness?" in an introductory chapter of the same name. Straining to step down from the lofty heights of aesthetic bodybuilding, the reigning Mr. Olympia piles on the metaphors like he's loading up for a T-bar row. These were certainly exercises that Arnold included in his workout routines. However, if he did use this specific routine, he doesn’t mention it in any of his books. Although there are 5- and 6-day variations, the default version of the upper/lower split involves training four days a week.
