Our consumer research has found that availability of budget ranges is important to people in the current crisis. Providing more budget ranges was the top action that people wanted from supermarkets to help them save money on food and more than half (56%) of those finding their finances very difficult said that they would benefit from more budget ranges being available [ 30]. The supermarket giant launched its first UK store in Birmingham in 1990. By 2025, Aldi plans to have 1,200 UK stores. My Aldi of choice for this mid-week trip was the Norton Heights branch on Leek New Road. The store underwent a revamp last year, which saw the addition of wider aisles and new freezers, along with bakery items being moved to the front of the store. This echoes survey research we conducted in August 2022 which found that even earlier in the cost of living crisis households were making significant adjustments to their spending habits. The vast majority of people (85%) told us that they were trying to do something to save money on food, with the most common changes being looking for items on promotion (55% of consumers), trading down to cheaper products (50% of consumers) and less regularly buying expensive or treat foods (42%), as shown in Figure 2 [ 3]. Supermarkets have a crucial role supporting people during the current cost of food crisis - and particularly helping people in the places around the country where they are most likely to be struggling.

These brands were assessed as they are the major supermarkets following a traditional model, typically offering a range of price points and brands for different items, including specific budget lines, which makes our question about budget lines pertinent in a way that it isn’t in discount stores which offer a much smaller range of products and engage in more limited brand proliferation [ 31] [ 32].
