Here's the deal: for this inaugural installment, Linsey Miller gives you the story of Disney's The Little Mermaid (primarily the animated film, but there are also nods to the Broadway musical) from Eric's POV.

This book was just fine in the long run. Eric has a curse which I think pairs well with the original but everything that has been added for “more Eric content” just doesn’t make sense. Like I’m sorry that boat scene around the 70-80% mark was ridiculous. This book is also inclusive without feeling forced. One character, Gabriella, is a lesbian, while another character, Sauer, uses they/them pronouns. Both Gabriella’s sexuality and Sauer’s pronouns are no big deal. It’s treated so normally that it actually took me a while to notice Sauer’s pronouns. Disney has done some questionable things in the past, but this book is fortunately not one of them. I loved reading Eric's point of view, it is fascinating, and it gives him this beautiful, complex character arc while keeping the same kindness and cheerfulness he has in the original Disney story. I especially love it so much because I see it as canon. It isn't a retelling or some fun addition that doesn't necessarily have to follow the original. On the contrary, the majority of the book is largely based on the movie, with most of the scenes and lines taken directly from it. Besides, even the additional scenes that aren't in the movie directly correlate with it. There are some changes but nothing unappealing. Additionally, the plot is fantastic, and there is so much more world-building and exposition. True YA, but will probably appeal to New Adults who are now Disney Adults as Xennials were 100% the target audience for Little Mermaid when it first came out. In Fantasmic!, Eric joins Ariel and other Disney couples during the princess-themed medley. He also makes an appearance riding Steamboat Willie during the show's finale. Disney's Sleeping Beauty 1959 is my favorite animated movie of all time. I love the aesthetic of the film, the music, the character design, the scary lighting on Maleficent. It's art. For example, it explains why Ariel doesn’t write what she wants to say and why Ariel didn’t read her contract with Ursula. Eric contributes singing vocals to the opening song "Fathoms Below", and performs two solo songs: "Her Voice", a song about Eric's obsession with Ariel's voice that had been written for the original film but discarded, and "One Step Closer", a new song where Eric helps Ariel express herself through dance. Eric also provides vocals in the quartet "If Only", where he expresses confusion over his attraction to Ariel, and his fear that if he finds the girl with the right voice, he might lose Ariel.

Because the cover here is The Plague has left a population divided between Elites and Ordinaries—those who have powers and those who don’t; now, an Ordinary teen fights for her life. The prequel television series is set before the events of the 1989 film and focuses almost entirely on Ariel. However, Eric makes very brief cameo appearances in three episodes. Preserving the continuity where Eric and Ariel only first met in the original film, the two never met each other in the television series, despite appearing side-by-side. Overall, I did enjoy Prince of Song & Sea. Whether you’re a general Disney fan or just can’t get enough of The Little Mermaid, it expands this world with a story that reframes the film from the perspective of Prince Eric. It also offers a glimpse at what’s to come in this new Disney Prince Novel series. And while it’s not yet known which prince will be the next one featured, it does make a casual reference to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
