Hannah is being stalked by Leo while writing about Freddie, who is engaging with friends she met at a murder scene, and is also writing about the people she met the day a woman was murder in the Boston Public Library. Hannah also names another character in the book, Freddie’s friend, neighbor and fellow scholar, Leo). The Woman in the Library is an unexpectedly twisty literary adventure that examines the complicated nature of friendship - and shows that words can be the most treacherous weapons of all.In the story-within-a-story, Boo, an unhoused man and a person with an addiction to drugs, demands money from Cain and later hits him over the head with a glass bottle. I just finished the audiobook and listened to the last chapter multiple times to see if I’d missed something. But the unique two intercepted storylines ( both of them are interesting) and smart ending earned my additional half star. Freddy is writing a book and she decides to incorporate these three people into her book, a sort of writing what she sees. I have to say, Gentill’s style of writing is very good as that first chapter set the tone for what I felt was likely to be a solid murder mystery.

We know that Letters-Leo consciously imitated Book-Leo with the cupcakes, and that Letters-Leo also said he’d do anything for Hannah… So, was the point that Book-Leo was the better version for Freddie? It also ends rather abruptly, and with there being two characters named ‘Leo’ but who each work in different ways towards the two plots, the ending really left me adrift. Leo, a fan who corresponds with Hannah, provides details based on real murders to help her with her manuscript.

Now, before I get into my review, I want to let you all know about the trigger warnings I found while reading. As Hannah keeps sending her chapters the mystery becomes more convoluted and Freddie falls for one of the men (who has a dark past). The outer story, with Hannah authoring the murder mystery, doesn't mesh with the actual inner story itself, and her correspondences with Leo are by far the weakest parts of the whole thing.

The narration was very good although I did stumble over a few Aussie accented words and would laugh when I figured out what I was really hearing because I was so off base. Meanwhile, in Hannah’s novel, the four friends are increasingly unsettled by revelations about Cain McLeod’s past. The other woman, Marigold, heavily tattooed, has a rather obvious crush on their tablemate, Whit Metters, and the fourth is a handsome fellow named Cain McLeod. These questions made for kind of an interesting look at inspiration and fiction, but it was sort of flat as a thriller ending. While crafting this new thriller, Hannah shares each chapter with her biggest fan and aspirational novelist, Leo.I found myself frustrated at first with the plot within the plot as I was having a tough time following it. Tim Ayliffe, author of The Enemy Within Hannah Tigone, bestselling Australian crime author, is crafting a new novel that begins in the Boston Public Library: four strangers; Winifred, Cain, Marigold and Whit are sitting at the same table when a bloodcurdling scream breaks the silence.
