The Reserve series is, according to Polk Audio, the replacement of their previous RTiA series and second in line to their top of the line Legend series but looking at these new speakers and comparing them to the other Polk Audio ones it seems that the R700 have far more similarities to their more expensive brothers. It is as if Polk Audio tried to create a “Legend Light” version that would be more affordable to the masses but without compromising their quality and sound characteristics.

Listening Sessions

The Pinnacle Ring Radiator Tweeter’s distinctive pointed shape guides the dispersion of high frequency sounds around a room. This innovation widens the sweet spot and allows you freedom to enjoy your music and movies wherever you choose to sit. The cabinet comes pre-assembled with the feet and this is because the stand it comes on utilizes Polk’s Power Port. These speakers may not look much upon first look and especially with the grilles attached. It’s the usual boxy column with rounded corners and a flat top while the grille is covering a big area of the front baffle. It’s when we get the grille off that things become more interesting, but more on this shortly. Next we get a 6.5″ mid-range Turbine cone. “Turbine cone” is surely a fancy name to use but the shape of the cone does indeed feature seven fin-type protrusions that create a vortex pattern and thus the name. According to Polk Audio this design gives the cone a more rigid construction without the need to increase its mass. This way the woofer can move with increased accuracy and speed to deliver much higher resolution than a conventional cone. Some people also don't pay attention to Polk's guidelines in setting up the l800s then complain they sound like normal speakers.. well lol, that happens when you don't follow directions.

Genuine Audiophiles, Not Salesmen: We aren’t just in this for sales. We're in it for the love of sound, and to enhance your auditory experiences. Polk Audio is an known and respectable brand for some time now, but when it comes to floorstanding speakers they were never the first name that came to mind. They had their fare share of good releases but it felt like they never had a lot of faith in their capabilities in making top quality premium speakers. The Polk Audio R700 may not be on the extreme high end of the pricing spectrum but this really works on their favor as what we have is a really unique speaker.

Pros

Certified with Hi-Res, Dolby Atmos Enabled, and IMAX Enhanced, these speakers guarantee incomparable audio quality and a colossal home theater experience. Features Clean, effortless bass is produced by Power Port 2.0, complementing the dual 8" woofers while reducing turbulence and port noise. The meticulously-crafted cabinetry ensures optimal internal resonance control and broadened sound dispersion for the ultimate sound stage. The Polk Reserve R700 floorstanders deliver a bold sound, performing equally well with both 2 channel stereo and home cinema surround sound setups. A one inch Pinnacle dome tweeter provides crisp highs for detail, while the 6.5 inch Polk Turbine cone delivers clarity in the all-important midrange. The turbine cone combines a foam core with moulded turbine geometry to dramatically improve stiffness and damping, without adding extra weight. The Turbine cone lets you experience a smooth and detailed midrange and bass. As far as how each 'sounds', they are near identical in the fact they timbre match NEAR perfectly. Hell to me even the r200 vs l200 sound near the same with the L200 sounding a touch cleaner and sharper. More refined is best I can describe it. But not enough to make a timbre difference with mix matching in a setup. Keep in mind, these differences only popped out when I was doing very critical side by side testing and they are minor. Day to day use I have never noticed a timbre difference in my reserve and legend surround mix of speakers. All flows perfectly.

A true test for these speakers would obviously be their low end output during the most demanding sequences. Now, obviously if we had a subwoofer, especially a good one, there is no question that we would get much better and deeper low end but for what these speakers have to work with, what we heard was far better than expected. Reserve Series: The Polk Reserve Series offers modern styling combined with Polk's premium Pinnacle tweeter and Turbine midrange/midbass driver that deliver high-resolution detail and imaging. The Polk Reserve Series consists of three floorstanding loudspeakers ( R700/ R600/ R500), two bookshelf loudspeakers ( R200/ R100), two center-channel speakers ( R400/ R300), a LCR loudspeaker ( R350), and a Dolby Atmos height speaker module ( R900) - all sold separately. Turbine Cone Midrange & Woofers: The floorstanding loudspeaker houses one 6.5" Turbine Cone midrange driver and two 8" Turnine Cone woofers to handle midrange, midbass, and bass frequencies. Polk developed the new Turbine cone to ensure the natural reproduction of the midrange, the frequencies our ears are so sensitive to. The Turbine cone combines Polk's proprietary foam core and the molded Turbine geometry which dramatically increases stiffness and damping, without adding mass - resulting in a smooth, detailed midrange and effortless bass.

Power Port 2.0 and compatibility

The R700 surely are big speakers as we measured them 12.6 x 45 x 16.9 in (320.7 x 1143.8 x 428.3mm) including the feet while they weight a mind blowing 79.1 lbs (35.9 kg) making them the second heavier speaker from Polk Audio that we have tested (the first place still goes to the LSiM707) and far heavier than the RTiA speakers that these are supposedly replacing. L800 has some insane bass. I mean insane. It does have dual 10s though vs dual 8s in R700. I'd argue the L800 bass is a tad tighter, but whether that's in my head or just due to it being able to output more and go lower hz.. who knows. I don't have tools for scientific studies lol Although for rear speakers we had for use were a different brand, the R700s had no problem creating a 360 degree bubble that felt cohesive and complete and worked harmoniously with the rears. Sound imaging was noteworthy and all sounds had remarkable accuracy in space making them an excellent choice if you are looking for some quality speakers for your home theater. And then we have the bass woofers. The R700 comes with dual 8″ polypropylene cones that come with some beefy surrounds indicating they can push the low end to interesting levels. But there is more as the R700 is also using Polk’s Power Port 2.0. This seems to be the latest version of their successful Power Port technology that smooths the flow of air as it exits the cabinet through the port.
