Indeed, it’s a worth a look purely for how it captures pre-yuppie London – the backstreets of Soho and Piccadilly, the high-rise Thameside flats (some of which seasoned cult film fans may recognise from Theatre Of Blood), the fashions, the endless parade of Austin Rovers, Ford Granadas and Triumph Dolemites – and it’s never looked cleaner or sharper than in this Blu-ray remaster.

What Linda Lovelace was to American adult films in the Seventies, Mary Millington was the British equivalent. The fourth and final Confessions film was released in 1977, with the final in the original run of Carry On movies the year after. This cinematic sexual revolution even pushed the boundaries of what was permissible in ‘respectable’ arthouse cinema, for instance Don’t Look Now, The Night Porter and Last Tango In Paris, while Russ Meyer made a clean breast of Uncle Sam with Supervixens and Up! cultural context to it all, and the actual Millington films he has assembled are often unexpectedly winning in their own weird ways. It’s sad to see the potential of The Playbirds squandered in this embarrassing dud – even Lake’s missus, the wonderful Diana Dors, phones it in.

Individually numbered and limited to 3,000 units, UK label Screenbound has created this deluxe Blu-ray box set as a loving tribute to Mary Millington and her career. Despite their status as “adult” films these were highly professional productions with stout recording fidelity. And the young actresses, like Mary Millington, are all dressed in nurses' outfits (naturally) and cavort with the old-timers. Each disc is loaded with special features, ranging from audio commentaries to rare adult 8mm films made by Mary Millington before she hit the big time in Come Play With Me. We also have Queen Of The Blues (1979) and posthumous film Mary Millington's True Blue Confessions ( 1980), which is the most eye-opening of the lot. A tantalising orgy of extras that no self-respecting lover of Mary Millington or 1970s British sex comedies can but fail to be aroused by!

It should be noted that Screenbound has avoided using any “hardcore” adult material in these special features. Filled with scintillating new extras, packaged in a collectable case (displaying brand new artwork throughout) and including a huge 80-page book, written by biographer Simon Sheridan (author of Keeping the British End Up: Four Decades of Saucy Cinema) and with an introduction by producer David Sullivan. It’s notable that the more layers of clothes Mary sheds, the more comfortable she appears before the camera , appropriate for her skill set.The film has been digitally remastered and the disc features an extensive stills gallery, production notes written by historian Simon Sheridan, plus Mary Millington's World Striptease Extravaganza (1981) and Response, a short lesbian film starring Mary Millington, made in 1974. In The Playbirds it’s fair to say that Alan Lake’s charisma was put to great use, and he visibly relishes every scene he appears in, with charming brio; by comparison, Confessions Of The David Galaxy Affair is what happens when you give your lead actor free rein for all his most appalling excesses – problematic ain’t the word for some of ‘em – and Millington’s character barely troubles the narrative. Providing a candid look back at her life and career in films is the 2015 documentary from her biographer Simon Sheridan – Respectable: The Mary Millington Story.
