The four smaller screens line up with the rotaries, with the top third of each screen displaying assignments for the top row of knobs. The assignments for the lower set of knobs are displayed on the bottom third. Giving you more tools to manipulate your sound, the Hydrasynth's three oscillators are fed through a mixer, a Noise Generator and a Ring Modulator.

Industry-standard MIDI and USB/MIDI interfaces are available on the Hydrasynth, but we go deeper and allow the use of CV / Gate interfaces for connecting to the modular world. This opens a door to the unlimited expansion of your musical horizons.
Patch memory has increased in v2.0! The Hydrasynth now holds 8 banks of 128 patches, for a total of 1,024. We hired some of the best sound designers in the world to create the factory patches. PW-ASM: Divides the incoming wave into 8 slices and lets you set the amount of FM that is applied to each segment. This is FM unleashed. The modulation section is equipped with a comprehensive Mod Matrix, five LFOs, and five loopable DAHDSR envelopes with definable Curve and BPM value for each segment. Eight assignable Macros can be used for advanced control over multiple parameters. Although creating new sounds on Hydrasynth is very intuitive, the synth also features a Randomizer that can be applied as to individual modules, as well as to the whole patch itself. There is something of a learning curve but remember we are dealing with a lot of complexity. The Hydrasynth is a deep synth, so it’s always advisable to sketch out mental maps of your sounds first, then go in. I also suggest reading the manual too. It can't hurt. But if you’re into modular then the Hydra, with its module-based layout, will be very easy for you to get to grips with.

For the uninitiated poly aftertouch allows you to play a chord and add modulation to one (or multiple) notes in the chord. This is incredible because you can achieve effects played by one hand that can sound like a melody and accompaniment in one – all the while your other hand is free). The ribbon controller and polyphonic after touch are just stunning and a joy to play. Lots of modulation and pre-sets, (but of course you can make your own). A quirky synth with an odd workflow definitely not for beginners. Trying to design a bread-and-butter patch on this synth can take many times longer than on a straightforward VA synth like a Nord or DSI/Sequential. Oscillators also alias a bit more than I had been led to believe by reviewers. But it is very deep and I think it can take you places you haven't been before!It really is an all purpose tool and it does not surprise me why it has received the praise that has been heaped upon it since it's launch late last year. The Hydrasynth effects chain goes beyond the typical ones found in other synths. Pre-effects and post-effects give you some unique ways to process your sound, including pitch effects, Lo-Fi, EQ, and Distortion. You’ll also discover linear FM within the 'mutants' and some unique types of pulse-width modulation. Furthermore, there are five (looping) envelopes per-voice, an amp module, two filter modules, five LFOs, reverb and delay modules, plus pre and post effects. Five LFOs and five DAHDSR envelopes are on board the Hydrasynth, further powering your sound shape shifting adventure.

Each LFO has delay, fade in, 3 triggering modes, smoothing, start phase, BPM sync, and a One-Shot mode so that they can act as envelopes. The arpeggiator has all the standard arpeggio directions plus a few twists (up, down, and/or sideways, sort of). There's also a built-in phrase mode, and version 2.0 adds new features like Step Offset and increases the range to 6 octaves. Parameters like RATCHET and CHANCE will generate other semi-random rhythmic patterns to add life and spontaneity to your performance. I'm talking about the Yamaha CS‑80, of course. This mighty instrument, in the hands of virtuosos such as Vangelis, proved that synthesizers really could be responsive, expressive musical instruments after all.Each of the oscillators lets you choose from a selection of 219 single-cycle waveforms. And on top of that, two of the oscillators have powerful wavemorphing capabilities.
