The Hollywood Blog caught up with costume designer Trish Summerville to talk about the fashions she chose for Katniss, Peeta, and the competitors in the arena—plus, how she handled author Suzanne Collins’s frequent impulse to have characters appear nearly naked.

But she has a lot of good ideas, she knows how things should fit, and she wanted all her clothes to be very constricting — she has that funny walk [in the movie] because she can’t walk any other way. Her shoes are so outrageously high and uncomfortable, and she wanted that. I’m like, “Are you sure you can do the scene?” And she’s like, “Yes, I’ll do it. I’ll take them off in between shots. It’ll be fine.” She was miserable, but she did it because she felt it was right. In the book, the fashions are so outrageous in the Capitol that they aren’t meant to be actually worn. On Lucy Gray's makeup: "We wanted to do something flushed and beautiful to go with the iconic rainbow dress from the book. Her performance looks were colorful and included a gold upper lined and bleeding red messy cupid's bow, gold shadows, bright pink lips, and shadows, with a nod to an overall period look." In an interview with MTV, costume illustrator and designer Christian Cordella said he worked on "pretty much everything from the fire dress to the Hunger Games suit." We had to have it so that she could spin, and it would twirl when she twirled. That wedding dress was quite heavy. I spoke with the designer of the dress, Tex Saverio, via Skype on a lot of it. He built this kind of hoop underneath, to make sure it stayed light. The spinning worked, surprisingly, really, really well. When she was onstage, I was pretty surprised at how much air it did catch.

The Academy uniform was unisex. Summerville explained: "With the Capitol, when they have you in a group setting—bootcamp or the Peacekeepers—you work for them. They look at you as one of a million. It’s a bit communistic and regimented." [10] This Friday, a little old movie called The Hunger Games (based on the first book from Suzanne Collins’s best-selling trilogy) hits theaters. Costume designer Judianna Makovsky had the task of re-creating the looks for the people of Panem, including the outrageous pink getup Elizabeth Banks wears as Effie Trinket, the uniforms worn by tributes as they fight to the death, and Jennifer Lawrence’s show-stopping “girl on fire” moment. Makovsky, who hadn’t even read the books before director Gary Ross offered her the gig, talks about becoming a fan, her connection to Lenny Kravitz, and whether she’s Team Peeta or Team Gale. What is Jennifer like to work with?The costumes of the male and female in the 74th Hunger Games represented folded origami paper. Their headpieces were sculpted to look like a professionally made origami. [1] However, Johanna Mason later stated that their stylist was the biggest idiot in the Capitol and had dressed the District 7 tributes as trees for the last forty years, contradicting the costumes used in the films. Covered in sparkly gold sequins and spectacular moon headpieces, the male and female tributes sported far-out costumes for the 74th Hunger Games. They were "flying to the moon." It also represented that it takes time to travel, and that some people used to use the moon for directions. [1] District 7 - Lumber [ ] Well, when you do these costumes, each one is your children, and they all present their own problems and issues. Perhaps the biggest problem — even bigger than dealing with visual effects — was the weather where we were shooting [in North Carolina]. It was 90, more like 100 degrees, and 100 percent humidity.
