Citrus plants may be large in their native habitats, but they maintain a small size easily in the right conditions. Your trees could be residents of a greenhouse, patio, or they can be grown indoors. Watch out for the thorns, though!

There will be a natural place to snap the leaves from, you can see from the image above that it forms a heal when it snaps off. By placing them immediately into water you will find roots appear quite naturally. Citrus are not hardy in cold countries and must be kept in a pot, in a conservatory, greenhouse, or on a cool well-lit windowsill in the cold months. In severe weather, a heated conservatory or fleece is recommended. Do not keep near a hot radiator. Cover the root ball with a mixture of one-part compost, one-part sand, and 2-parts cedar shavings. Make sure that the root collar is above the soil. Gently firm the soil. Grew up in Florida and know all those tropical fruits. I love it when people try to grow exotic tropical plants outside of their temperature zone. After the first growth, you can use a slow-release fertilizer for citrus trees. You can feed your tree three times per year using a few tablespoons for mature trees. The best is to apply the fertilizer in early spring, early summer, and late summer.

Kaffir Lime Leaves

The Kaffirs are an Afro-Sri Lankan ethnic group who still live in Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon). Sri Lanka is one of the locations where Citrus hystrix has a long history of use — and possibly where the plant originated. To remove ants, you can mix equal parts peanut butter, honey, and borax into a paste and fill up old bottlecaps to set around the tree base. Alternatively, you can paint the trunk with Tanglefoot Trap to prevent the ants from getting to the fruit. Kaffir limes prefer full sun in moist, well-drained soil. If grown indoors, keep near a sunny window. The Kaffir lime tree appreciates water and somewhat humid conditions during the growing season. Keep in mind, however, that this tree is prone to root rot if kept too wet, so allow the soil to dry out some between waterings. Regular misting helps with humidity levels.
