The way she ties herself in ever-tighter knots trying to fit in and please everyone is something we can all relate to. This effectively contrasts the out-of-body feeling that Gilda experiences at many points throughout the novel. Gilda’s focus on death and the chaotic realities of existence can make societal conventions (such as what’s considered a sin) seem small in comparison.
