Certain submersible pumps are able to transport combustible liquids. In this case it is essential that care is taken. Clean water pumps are suitable for use with relatively clear water sources, such as pools, cisterns, or pipe leaks. The fluids they can pump generally cannot contain particles above 1mm in size. Dirty water pumps can also be used in the pumping of clear water, but have the added benefit of being able to pump water that contains particles and contaminations such as mud and salt. A submersible pump is one that has to be immersed in water. It has a suction grid fitted to the bottom, through which water is drawn directly into the pump.
