About this deal

This is based around the ES9018K2M chipset from the Sabre32 Reference family, enabling the amp to benefit from ESS Technology’s 32-bit HyperStream architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator. Mission is promoting two package deals that combine the 778X with popular standmount models from its range, forming great-value, high-quality audio systems. Against this, the headphone socket isn’t as sublimely talented but it’s more than up to the job of a spot of late night listening from time to time. Crisply defined detail reveals the character of voices and instruments, impressive dynamic range conveys natural impact, and the amp’s transient ability keeps feet tapping with rhythmic music. The new 778X has much in common with the original, a compact, half-width design that delivers a sound that belies its diminutive footprint.

Unlike Audiolab designs, there is no MQA support but… in the current climate, I am not sure how critical that’s going to be. Credit is provided by Novuna Personal Finance, a division of Mitsubishi HC Capital UK PLC Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. As noted, this JFET based design has appeared in the Leak and some Audiolab models and it’s a fine vehicle to enjoy a turntable through.

The front of the amp sports a pair of smooth-acting rotary controls –one for source selection, the other for volume –surrounded by white LEDs to show current settings. The only thing was, wished there was a way to keep the cubes uniform and still stick an amplifier inside the shelves. The digital board is impressively transparent in how it reproduces content from the Roon Nucleus or indeed the Oppo connected up via OTG cable and playing the same Qobuz files. That ‘by and large’ is important though because while the lettering on the front panel is pretty subtle, the rather larger ‘Mission’ script on the top of the 778X isn’t. Excellent amp for your money I recently upgraded my starter turntable (which had served me well for 2 years) to a Rega Planar 2, and needed a Phono stage to pair it with.
