About this deal

It is legal to give a clue for only one word, but you will have to give some clues for two if you want to win the game. A successful clue for three or more words is a big accomplishment. The First Clue You must never reveal anything about your side of the key card, except that you must tell your partner when all words you see as green have been covered by green agent cards. The game provides a massive cooperative challenge for players straight out of the box, but also offers you a way of incrementally increasing your difficulty by moving through different challenges. Some challenges allow more bystanders so you can afford to take bigger risks on high-value clues, but others just stretch the game length but allow you to make no wrong guesses at all, rewarding a slower and more precise style of clue-giving.

Honestly, this game has probably made me laugh the hardest of any party game I’ve ever played. It’s a bit of a different vibe than Codenames, but so much fun. This is also important to keep in mind when you are thinking up clues. Your partner will have another chance to guess a word he or she missed on your first clue, so it might not be necessary to give another clue for that same word. Codenames Duet does a great job of replicating the gameplay of the original for two players and is a far superior option to the two-player mode in the original. However, it can be a bit more stilted in terms of flow. As both players are taking turns giving clues and guessing them, there is no downtime for the clue giver to think. This, in turn, seems to result in longer pauses, as the clue giver desperately tries to link their words together and avoid the three assassins. To top it off, there’s the games’ pure entertainment value. If you know your teammate(s) well, you can tailor your clues. On the flip side, the games can also illuminate gaping holes in people’s knowledge. For example, during one game, my roommate gave me the clue “Moses” in hopes I would guess “locust” on the board. I stumbled through a laughable but painful soliloquy during which I ventured as far as to insert Moses’ name into “Moses and Technicolor Dreamcoat,” as I grasped at straws trying to see any word on the board that could possibly be connected. (A few minutes later I remembered it is, in fact, “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat.”) In the end, I opted out of making a guess for that clue.The downside is that the agents won’t recognize what number of words related to the clue that was simply given. While it’s hard to imagine “Telephone” being performed by anyone other than Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, the Gaga-penned global hit was actually intended for Britney Spears. In this game, players are broken up into two teams. Teams will receive a set of keywords that are inserted into “screens” along with a set of numbers.But there are also words spymasters want teammates to dodge. Players want to avoid guessing the other team’s words because it earns points for the enemy (and immediately ends the turn). There are also neutral beige cards called “innocent bystanders,” which don't end the game, but put a team at a disadvantage when guessed, as their turn ends. There is an included campaign map, where you travel around the globe activating your spy network. As you progress through the campaign you will have to play the game with different restrictions, such as a more limited number of turns. Or perhaps you aren’t allowed to reveal as many civilians. These challenges get extremely hard towards the end. Taking turns, players must play their cards (or tiles) in the correct numbered sequence. Your teammates will offer limited clues to let you what to play from your hand. A turn always uses up a timer token. The number of timer tokens left in the time bank is the number of turns (and the number of clues) left in the game.
