They do look a bit similar in pictures, but the Farpoint is absolutely NOT as structured or as stiff as the Porter. A padded hip belt is nice because it takes the load off your shoulders and transfers it to your hips.

Also, the Farpoint has a more substantial backpanel than the Osprey Porter 46, so we didn't have to pay as much attention to what we packed against our backs to ensure awkwardly shaped, hard objects didn't end up protruding into our backs. Clearly, Osprey agrees as they’ve equipped the Farpoint 55 with an inconspicuous rescue whistle right on the chest strap. After trying out a few, I decided upon the Farpoint 55; it’s nice to know that you’re so happy with it! You can take the daypack off and have a supremely comfortable fast-and-light pack option as well, for toting around town, or to take on a short bike tour or day hike--this pack covers comfort at both ends of the pack weight spectrum.What I usually just do is travel with the Farpoint 40 (or any carry-on really) and carry a daypack by the handle, or ‘double strap’ it with the daypack in front of my body — at least for those short periods of time in transit where you might have to carry both at the same time. The main bag is carry-on and the entire harness can be stowed neatly behind a zipped panel — ideal for when you’re checking it in or want to carry it by the handle without any straps dangling around.

This feature means you don't have to the shoulder straps of the day pack behind your shoulders, which then pulls your shoulders in opposing directions. I use a Kestrel 38 which is a great size for carry-on but still rugged and comfortable enough for serious trekking. You did mention that the Farpoint/Fairview 40 is a size more suited for summer in Eu or trips in Asia. The Farpoint 55 comes with a fully detachable dayback that gives you ultimate flexibility with your travels. The standard set of gear, top, was packed into each bag to compare capacities with an actual load rather than relying on the company's reported volume numbers.

Does any of you have experiences with the Osprey daypack exceeding the limits, especially with Ryanair?
