Hi, we have just started to use a kong with out 10 week old puppy, just keeping it simple to start but he cries/whines the whole time using it. Being too small can be a choke risk, but being too big can be painful to chew and put them off so you might have to progress through a few until she reaches full size! Hi Jana, the specific foods you use should give you an idea but generally food is thought to be good for 3-6 months in the freezer and that this is extended if kept in air tight containers (we put ours in a sealed Tupperware before putting in the freezer – though ours would never have a chance to last so long! The toys when stuffed with a treat are designed to provide mental and physical stimulation, and for pups it helps teach appropriate chewing behavior. Dry kibble won’t freeze into a solid block unless moistened (you can soak dry food first before stuffing it to help). Before we can get to the stage of stuffing a Kong tightly and freezing it to create a really long lasting treat.

Giving your puppy a stuffed KONG to enjoy inside their crate helps them build a positive association with their new safe place. Having it down at all times doesn’t add or remove any value as it’s the food component which is doing all the good when you’re gone, but if you prefer to pick it up and clean it (and have time to freeze it) that’s no problem too. Your pup will enjoy them much more than being fed from a bowl, but doing a mix won’t confuse them, you and your dog will just get more out of it the less you use a bowl! Your puppy will bite and chew probably more than you ever realised, so have lots of chew toys such as puppy kong toys available for your puppy to take out that teething on. But it will also start to teach them the required techniques when using a stuffed Kong such as dropping the Kong, chewing the outside and licking the inside.
