It is totally different from the first book, which of course it had to be to keep things interesting but it was totally not what I expected at all! Similarly endowed with magical skills, Zozie soon ingratiates herself into the family and quickly latches onto Anouk's sadness and insecurities, encouraging her to develop her own magical abilities and to tell her all there is to know about her family's history.

Anouk is unhappy and lonely, and six-year-old Rosette is non-verbal, for reasons which are left ambiguous.Do you feel weighed down by stress and pressure, held back by judgement and lack of opportunity, and critcised by everyone – including yourself? After adopting a new identity for herself and her daughter Anouk, she decides she wants a ‘normal’ life, to abandon the magical life and settle down with her landlord Thierry who happens to have a thing for her.

But beneath their new friend's benevolent facade lies a ruthless treachery--for devious, seductive Zozie has plans that will shake their world to pieces. year old Rosette comes onto the scene very early in this book - but the question is who is her father? There are lots of twists and turns (more than the first one) which would keep a reader engaged and keep on turning the pages.Thierry le Tresset is described by Vianne as tall and heavy, with "an open face", "working hands", and "best suited to building walls".

I'm in love with this book (I'm biased because I love Joanne Harris) and if you've read Chocolat then you will appreciate this book. Of course, these stories were originally written for adults, not children; and their bleakness and cruelty of their symbolism reflects the kind of world for which they were written. She is the author of many other bestselling novels, including Lollipop Shoes, Peaches for Monsieur le Cure, and The Strawberry Thief, all also featuring Vianne Rocher.
