The spider catches the children stealing Zachariah's piggy bank, but the kids get away with the bank after a fight that leaves the spider weakened. Finally fed up with the spider, Zachariah crushes it, even though he knows killing the spider will kill his mother. But his mother actually thanks Zachariah for freeing her; trying to comfort her tearful son with her last words.

My father in law is one of the Fairbridge Boys that came out from England at the same time as the author, and is in the book a number of times. He has trouble talking about his time at the Fairbridge Farm, and this book has explained a lot about why. I can understand that Pearl wanted a child and it was obviously her idea to foster/adopt Richard. But she also knew what an abusive dominating A-hole her husband was ... so why would she subject a defenseless child to that kind of environment?! And once Richard arrived in the home and was beaten daily and nightly, she selfishly made him stay rather than returning him to the children's home for a better life. A story of child abuse is not a pleasant read. The ongoing pattern of abuse here makes one question the due diligence performed in approving this couple for fostering. The husband is willing to indulge his wife in having a plaything as long as he doesn't have to see it or be inconvenienced by it.

No one deserves to live in a corner, especially not children. Our little ones deserve to be attended to with caring words. They deserve our time even when we have had a long day. Furthermore, t hey deserve our never-ending patience and consolation.

After being rushed to hospital and against all odds, the baby survives. He's baptised by the hospital chaplain as Richard. Eventually, Telly visits Dr. Munce again and he reveals that the disappearances are the work of "them", and that the government monitors their trials, all too aware that they have no power to stop "them" from doing whatever they want.This was an interesting but hard book to read. It was sad reading about Richard's mother leaving him under a bridge to die. But then his life was happy when he was in the children's home. Having Pearl and Arnold be his foster parents should have been a good thing but it wasn't. Richard was quite graphic in the descriptions of his beatings ... that was tough to read. I'm glad that he seems to have had a happy life once he left Pearl and Arnold's. When the film was aired on basic cable the accident was changed, with all mentions of "plane" and "airport" dubbed to "bus" and "terminal".
