A beautiful gift boxed edition of Suntory's Roku gin. Roku is produced in the "Liquor Atelier", the specialised craft distillery for Suntory spirits and liquor. In fact, this is quite a subtle gin overall. There’s a light spiciness, and that citrus hit we mention isn’t a full-blown punch. If you’ve ever tried a Japanese whisky, you’ll already know that Japanese spirits often have a very harmonious quality. On the nose, the gin is light and floral, with hints of cherry blossom and green tea. On the palate, the gin is full of juniper and citrus notes, with a subtle hint of spice that lingers in the mouth. The balance of botanicals is perfect, with none overpowering the other, creating a well-rounded and complex taste profile. Smelling like fresh pine with a citrusy tinge, the fruity floral notes of sakura gently ebbs through Roku Gin and the whiff of Japan through the underlying green tea notes once you take a deep breath gives your palate a refreshing change. For instance, the delicate scent of cherry blossom is drawn out through vacuum distillation in stainless pot stills, whereas the deep flavour of yuzu is achieved by distillation in copper pot stills. Palate: Complex, multi-layered, yet harmonious flavour of various botanicals. Traditional gin taste in the base, plus characteristic Japanese botanical notes with yuzu as the top note. Smooth and silky texture.

You’re no doubt familiar with Japanese whisky, but the nation is fast becoming known for its gins, too. Infused with yuzu and sansho pepper with a rice spirit base, Ki No Bi gin is unlike anything else we sampled and will prove popular with gin enthusiasts – though you needn’t be an expert to appreciate the smooth-tasting spirit. Traditional gin botanicals also featured include the likes of juniper, orange peel, lemon peel, coriander and cinnamon, among others. Given 22 botanicals go into crafting this Scottish craft gin, it should come as no surprise that it won over our expert panel with its complexity and balance. Roku means “six” in Japanese which refers to the six local, seasonal botanicals which complement the eight traditional gin botanicals (juniper, coriander seed, angelica root & seed, cardamom, cinnamon, bitter orange, lemon peel). The Atelier owns four distinct types of pot stills and, in a process unique to Roku, the botanicals are distilled separately according to each feature of botanicals to extract the best flavour and maintain their individual characteristics. These four seasons include the beautiful sakura leaf and sakura flower for spring, sencha tea and gyokuro tea for summer, sansho pepper for autumn and yuzu peel for winter. By using a medley of Japanese botanicals – including Sakura leaf, yuzu, sencha tea and sansho pepper – Roku has created a truly unique gin.Roku Gin has approximately 110 calories per serving (25ml), making it a relatively low-calorie alcoholic spirit. It’s always worth noting that calorie contents will vary with the tonics/mixers you use. Keep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers! Roku Gin is the first of its kind, originating from Japan’s legendary Suntory – Roku Gin. Roku combines six Japanese botanicals with a range of eight more ‘traditional’ gin botanicals. It has a six-sided bottle, and Roku means six in Japanese. We weren’t familiar with some of the Japanese botanicals at work before trying Roku. It does have quite a citrus hit to it. Those more traditional gin botanicals seemed to dominate at first, but it then got more delicate the more we tried it.
