The way you;ve described Mrs Harris goes to New York as not being able to stand alone now makes sense as to why it;s together. Full of wonderful secondary characters, and some not so wonderful, it all makes for a very charming and delightfully fun read. For reasons that include her grim financial prospects and her age, she moves to a widow's boarding house and eventually finds work as a biology teacher. This handsome bright pink paperback combines the first two Mrs Harris books, in which the London char lady with a heart of gold finds herself having unlikely adventures in two of the world’s most remarkable cities, Paris and New York. Could, would, will Mrs Harris come along, just for a few months, to help establish the Schrieber’s new ménage?

Harris may well be a girl out of Enid Blyton books who has grown old, but not lost any of her zest for adventures. Such darling stories that really help one feel /have an idea of as if interacting and enjoying each location sure. Gallico draws her with such fondness that the rest of the cast, as well as the reader, cannot help but be charmed by her.

I think these two books have filled me with the most delight and genuine enjoyment of all the books I’ve read in 2021 so far. These are intended to be very lighthearted books, with a simple style that mirrors Mrs Harris's childlike nature, so I wouldn't knock off a star for lack of depth, but I did wonder why the Paris one is on Boxall's 1001 list. This seems to be the type of story that was best suited for visual pleasure, so I watched the 2022 historical film. There were also a few instances of racist language, particularly in the second book, which I found uncomfortable to hear, especially coming from Juliet Stevenson’s mouth! I LOVED Mrs Harris Goes to Paris, and while Mrs Harris Goes to New York is also very charming, it didn’t have quite the same magic; it’s very much a sequel and wouldn’t stand alone, as it implies a knowledge of the events of its predecessor.Mrs Harris therefore decides she will go to America and find little Henry’s father, and, as luck would have it, an American couple whom Mrs Harris ‘does’ for, the Schreibers, need to move back to New York for work reasons as the book opens. It is this realisation of the value of friendship, positivity, self belief and taking joy in the simple things, that is the true treasure Mrs Harris brings back from Paris. The term dates as far back as the late 16th century and is derived from an old medieval word 'chare' meaning an odd job or task. Very sweet and heartwarming story that is rather simple and ties up way too nicely from a realistic perspective. These stories are delightful and heart-warming, full of charming characters and enjoyable plotlines full of heart and humor. I preferred Paris to New York, which is always my complaint with these volumes with multiple books, but both were so sweet and fun that even liking NY a bit less, I still much preferred it to other books I’ve read.

Now I can see by the other reviews that most other readers manage to ignore the heart-wrenching part and find this book lovely, charming, heart-warming etc; all of these epithets apply, too, especially if you don't think that the ending is more important than the rest of the book.
