About this deal

The bright sound mode has been created and designed for optimal voice recording, this can be ideal for use when recording podcasts, or any spoken word. This mode records with elevated mid to high-range levels, letting you capture audio while minimising the effects of ambient sounds. The Tresmic II three‑mic array differs from previous versions, in that the centre capsule is now a directional one, rather than an omni. The recordings can be organised via custom folders, you can change the folders and file names using the DVR.Remote smartphone app. Each of your recorded clips can be easily searchable thanks to the calendar format, this automatically marks each recording with a date and is displayed in a calendar format The LS-P5 has both Slate Tone and Test Tone available when used as a camera microphone. Slate Tone sends a reference signal to your digital camera for easier editing, while Test Tone enables you to set the camera audio recording levels.

I saw this tiny thing on a musician-centric discord. A few people seemed happy with theirs, so I was curious. I accordingly did a search and good ol' Thomann had one of the keenest prices. They're a reputable supplier, so that sealed the deal. Some remote control features are included courtesy of Bluetooth connectivity, with users able to remotely start and stop recording, as well as adjust levels, change filter settings or microphone directionality via a free iOS and Android-compatible smartphone app. When using 16-bit recording modes, it is also possible to use the Bluetooth connection to wirelessly monitor the audio signal at distances of up to 10m.

My initial impression was "that's... REALLY small". It sits completely on the palm of my hand. The controls are tiny and I haven't completely got the hang of pressing the buttons after trimming my nails. However, I shall persist. Physically the new model looks much as before, with three microphones at the front, a small square dot matrix display, and the same button layout. For those who will need to capture more than the built-in storage capacity will tolerate, there is a Micro SD Card slot available. I was getting fed up with how long my ancient Zoom was taking to start up and wanted something a little more modern, for opportunistic field recording.

Speaking of that, I've found the card slot slightly hit and miss. When that happens, it switches to internal recording. This works fine (it has a usable 16GB of internal flash, I think) but it can give you a scary moment when you pop the card out and don't find any of your recordings.Music: You can use the device as a high-res audio player, by copying music files into a standard Artist/Album folder structure The self-noise is present but not terrible. It's no Sony D100, at least with the onboard mics. Maybe with very sensitive externals, the situation would improve, I haven't tried that yet, as nature ambience isn't my primary use case.
