It is a home for UK cinematic oddities, offering everything from exploitation documentaries to B-movies, countercultural curios and obscure classics, If it's weird, British and forgotten, then it's Flipside. We are—well, ask Bigfoot, as Brooks does in this delightful yarn, following on his bestseller World War Z (2006). After having enjoyed Shari LaPena’s debut novel, The Couple Next Door, I eagerly awaited her next work.

There are tragic stories of childhoods shattered by violence; of marriages fractured by six years of separation; of women who simply did not recognise their sons. Because Karen’s car accident was nearby and took place around the approximate time of death, Detective Rasbach—the assigned homicide detective—believes Karen to be connected to the murder.With a number of players involved in the investigation, the mystery element of the book is drawn out nicely. What I like about Shari Lapena’s books is, just when you THINK you have sussed it, you find out you’ve been wrong all along! The movie has almost everything lacking in the vast majority of thrillers turned out these days (going back decades), and is far more artfully assembled -editing, direction, acting, pacing, modulated but effective suspense, and narrative leanness, not a trace of fat- than almost everything that's come out since the turn of the millennium.

Added to the mystery is the discovery of the body of a murdered man, found in close proximity to the crash site. That in itself isn't unusual-most nights he comes home and opens the door and walks right in, because most nights Karen's home, waiting for him.Best-selling author Mark Manson brings his signature no-nonsense wisdom back to the subject he started his career covering: relationships. Seems like another one of those Lifetime movies here for old people that like a good PG rated mystery. Tom's complexity adds an extra layer of intrigue, as his motivations and actions are shrouded in uncertainty, adding to the book's enigmatic atmosphere. The author has woven strong female characters but had also created halfwitted images of her male characters.

It tells the story of Karen Krupp, who got into a car accident after, as witnesses have claimed, she fled from home unexpectedly. After a vicious fight with Jo, Barney is immobilised and Angela hides him in the attic of her house, where he is shot dead by an intruder.

I can’t go into details, but it was a very fitting conclusion and I would enjoy reading a short epilogue sometime in the future updating us on how the characters are doing. Part of what makes domestic thrillers such as A Stranger in the House work, is the use of an unreliable narrator. There’s a knock on the door—the police are there to take Tom to the hospital where his wife has been admitted. Brigid says, “She stopped being my friend the day she killed that man and lied to you and ruined your life.
