I had a premonition of setting out on a journey and getting lost inside a distant tide … It was the beginning of summer, and I was nineteen years old. The book's most egregious fault is that it hints at interesting and important ideas on the biological, political, economic, and social impact of the rise of the banana industry, but the author never bothers to develop these.The limited use of words and the very clear and animated illustrations allows the reader to make the story what they want and allows children to interact and be creative in the process. I am all for it on one level, since I like delving into the abstruse and wallowing in details that leave most people I know colder than a penguin's butt in the middle of the Antarctic winter; but on another level, I want to stop these publishers before they bore again with books inadequately edited and organized. Ultimately, I have to say the reason I finished the book at all was that I began enjoying rewriting it in my head. This brilliant and hilarious picture book from award-winning illustrator Yasmeen Ismail will have everyone laughing at this all-too familiar family situation! She’s struggling with long hours at the factory and upset because they haven’t heard from Susan’s soldier dad for months.

It starts with its beginnings in Asia, its geographic and evolutionary progressing, and the arrival of the banana to America. Rich in minerals and vitamins, the banana is considered the world's most popular fruit, and a super food for its richness of potassium and natural sugars. I decided to try this book for a toddler/preschool storytime after seeing this book on so many lists.There's more in here about corporate and pan-American politics than I expected on first hearing about the book, and I really enjoyed reading it.

I mean, I'd happily read 400+ pages about pencils, but I've noticed that other people might think that was a waste of time. Little children will giggle at the gorilla pictured with his bum out, while grown ups with foodrejecting offspring should enjoy the drawing of his disgusted face as he rebuffs the snack.The result is a "narrative" that jumps around, gets distracted, goes back, has sudden moments of humor and unexpectedly moving paragraphs, but it all kind of fits together nicely.
