This time Hal and his uncle are heading to the Arctic circle to see the Northern lights. As usual, they are caught up in a case and discover an assassin on the train. Once again, woven into the mystery are the descriptions of the country they are travelling through and I always look forward to reading these as they really help to set the scene for me. As ever, Hal's illustrations prove pivotal to the investigations and I always love to spend time studying the detail in each one. Hat's off to Elisa Paganelli for these - they make the best accompaniment to the story; as does the map at the beginning. I do love a book map.

Hal and Uncle Nat are travelling to see the Northern Lights during the festive season, and as the title may suggest, yup, there's an assassin aboot! So if your young readers are fans of my stories, but haven’t read this classic, why not get them this edition in which I wax lyrical about the importance of Mole, Ratty, Badger and Toady in my life. I am a big fan of this series and thoroughly enjoyed this new addition. Love the mystery, the travel and the relationships. I think I read somewhere that this might be the last book in the series, but I very much hope it isn’t because I would keep reading train mysteries in new locations! Yesterday, I spent a wonderful afternoon at the Natural History Museum in London with two world-renowned (and my favourite) coleopterists. Either one could be Bartholomew Cuttle from my Beetle Boy stories.

The Arctic Railway Assassin is the sixth instalment in the bestselling Adventures on Trains series. Hal and Uncle Nat travel to Sweden, boarding the overnight train to Narvik, the northernmost station in Europe, to see the Northern Lights just before Christmas. But danger is not far behind.

There's also another family member involved. I loved how much their arrival let the book show how much Hal has grown in confidence since < a href = https://sifaelizabethreads.wordpress.... HIGHLAND FALCON THIEF, and how much Nat trusts and respects Hal's judgement. Hal is older than at the start, and has been through a lot, and it was nice for that to be realistically portrayed. The adults are still doing their best to protect Hal, as is the duty of care any adult has to a minor, but he's never belittled or babied. They've all grown across six books. On Thursday the 13th of October, The Arctic Railway Assassin was published and we celebrated in style at Hatchards in Picadilly, London. The success of this series is not at all surprising as every book not only introduces the reader to a new location - and a new train - but also a brilliant new mystery to solve. The setting is of course a train, however the descriptions of the places they go, people they see and where they are are always written so brilliantly, you barely need the wonderful illustrations this book comes with, however this book is enriched and brought to life by the artwork throughout.The adventures on trains series is one of my favourite book series that I have ever read. Each book is unique and is set in a different place and has a different story to the previous, yet still has the vibe of mystery and adventure. The Arctic Railway Assassin is no different.
