About this deal

Cthulhu’s influence on literature and the arts since has been legion, and while I read the two films that jumped out to me was Close Encounters of the Third Kind and, of course, Ghostbusters; but Lovecraft’s stamp on all sorts of fictional media since has been prodigious. In 1987, Terror Australis: Call of Cthulhu in the Land Down Under was published. Having my start in the tabletop rpg genre with DND, Call of Cthulhu was such a surprising and life changing game to find. The ruleset and lore has everything I ever hoped to have in a tabletop game and more. It is actually quite amazing how much better the quality of this book and others from Chaosium are than the rest of the tabletop rpg market. To name everything that makes these books world class amongst the rest (in my opinion) is the art, design, game structure, rules, character creation, volume and quality of supplements, organization of the book(s), and best of all the feel of the game. This isn't the only tabletop rpg I play, but it will always be my favorite. So what is it that makes The Call of Cthulhu so terrifying? Mostly, I think the terror arises from the profound disorientation the reader experiences, a disorientation which comes from the shattering of our expectations of space and time. Lovecraft does this by toying with our assumptions about geometric relationships, the integrity of form, the size and hierarchy of objects, and the relationship of proximity and immediacy to temporal sequence and significance. CoC uses percentile dice (with results ranging from 1 to 100) to determine success or failure. Every player statistic is intended to be compatible with the notion that there is a probability of success for a particular action given what the player is capable of doing.
