About this deal

The grand scope of the many ideas and themes, including anti-establishment, anti-consumerism, and the very nature of good and evil, is balanced out by fast-paced events that play on a micro-level. The author spends a lot of time dehumanizing and degrading her--my favorite example of this being when she, for some unexplained reason, got it into her head that if he fucked her she would then be able to sleep. The explanation about eyes and head might suggest an accompanying touching-game (though that would surely be risky if you wanted the child to settle down). Yet his homecoming reawakens the ancient forces that haunt the island and seek to right a centuries-old crime. In the interim, panic ensues and a bizarre new world arises in which those previously on the fringes of society take the lead. Barnes tries to cram this book so full of Memorable, Quoteable Lines that absolutely nothing sticks. I did like the little bits of end of the world stuff that happened, some of the imagery sprinkled through was cool and interesting, and I think the idea of it all was fantastic, but the execution just wasn’t for me unfortunately.As we experience Nod through Paul, he details the unstoppable march toward a sleepless death with an unflinching eye. In the end, Josephus's Cain is still a greedy grasper who, rather than repenting from his original crimes, has actually managed to perfect them. My edition of the book also attached an essay from the author in which he detailed his cancer prognosis. It is filled with parables and commentary from the author, who so happens to be a vampire in the Masquerade universe.

Nod is a piece of speculative fiction about what would happen if nearly everyone in the world stopped sleeping. First, it demonstrates that Cain has not learned the lessons of his previous crime and his greed has developed to the point that he now marks off property that he has obtained so that it might not be stolen back from him. This is a problem for those who subscribe to a literal interpretation of the story of creation in Genesis. The name Nod is related to the participle נָ֖ד‎ in 4:12 which the LXX translated as τρέμων (trembling).For young Boo Taylor it’s a land of lush salt marshes and sun-soaked beaches, rich in history and folklore—yet steeped in superstition and hiding a terrifying secret. In the same vein as Stephen King’s Cell, Nod tastes and feels like a zombie novel but is a refreshing step away from the tried-and-true trope. I'm warning you that you might not like it because it is more literary than most fantasy you're likely to pick up. A few people, perhaps one in ten thousand, can still sleep, and they’ve all shared the same mysterious dream.

Some storytellers may find this book wonderfully useful and want to use the deeper details to flesh out their game’s stories or bring further life to the Sabbat vampires who follow the literal word of the book.NOD is about what happens to the world, when for some unknown reason the vast majority of the worlds population can now, suddenly, no longer sleep.
