About this deal

Working for Coppola's One From The Heart must have been an excellent opportunity for Waits to witness the dynamics of acting and directing. Each song is a platform for a new vocal muscle to be flexed, resulting in a cavalcade of characters under one lyrical roof.

But it's Waits's gravel-pit voice, from which he digs a number of distinct characterizations, that remains the most striking instrument. Since its original staging the play has never been performed again, and official sources confirm that, at the moment, Waits doesn't want the play to be staged ever again. See, by running a small theatre, if I want a blue light and an oversized cocktail glass and a red clock and a midget in a wet-suit, I can have it without having to send out, tuba, trombone, banjo, accordian, electric stick and an emcee with a pencil-thin mustache and a Mexican accent. Rudimentary versions of the songs appeared on a demo cassette labeled: Island, 1985 (as mentioned by Barney Hoskyns in Lowside Of The Road 2009).The song appeared in five different guises by five different artists, one for each season, with the Waits version itself oddly appearing second on season two. And of course the irony of a beautiful, delicate lyric being throttled by these Tom Waits reprobates is just perfect.

Even when percussion is absent, the body-movin' tendencies are still present as accordions, pump-organs and even a rooster twist the narrative through a carnival of broken dreams. But the down-and-out losers, boozers and life abusers of this presentation are the same folk Waits has lived with all along.
