Extending this hole, allows you to remove the third bolt and, with a little convincing lift of the bonnet, the catch body will completely lift out of its location. From full brake disc and pad sets through to small brake system accessories such as brake pedal switches and ABS sensors.

So I took it off again and went back to using the claw and then greased the latch up (especially when the clip is in the locked position - you can get down in the back of it with WD40 and grease). I can get the front VW badge off - no probs there - but all I can see is two very stiff hex bolts at 10 and 2 o'clock. However, please note that our tool is for reference only and we recommend that you check the part number on your old unit prior to purchasing. If the bonnet opens and closes fine, then your OK, just reconnect the alarm wire then simply put the screws back in.I can get the handle off and can take the panel off to get at the cable but the dial/wheel seems to be attached to a box - do I need to replace this entire box? The catch would occasionally jam but would release eventually, however one time it jammed completely with the catch released so I could not lock down the bonnet, it just kept bouncing up and down on the manual release, very annoying. This is because each bolt head has an approx 18mm diameter flange on it, so you need to get rid of this plastic to get clearance to ease the bolt out. A few years back, I had a problem where the bonnet wouldn't shut properly on my Golf MK5, this was because the lock had failed. Just to update on this: The dial/wheel is part of a complete fixture fixed to the car frame with two screws. You will reveal two torx25 screws, remove these and then you'll be able to lever the bonnet enough to get at the third torx screw which is slightly to the left and hidden by the grille.

There are two long ones holding the main part of the unit itself and a short one that holds the catch bar in place on the car. Its definitely worth spending some time in getting the old latch going before you go out and spend the money on a new one. You'll now be able to lift open the bonnet and the locking mechanism will come with it allowing you to fix/reattach cable etc. I’m summising it is also because it doesn’t give enough flexibility to the new lock module after you have installed it into your car and it pushes it out of placement.Having said that, if you have removed the first two bolts and loosen the third, the catch body will slightly lift out of its location slightly (rotating around the third bolt) If you know where to go on the catch body, you might be able to get a screwdriver (or some bent bit of metal) in to manually pull the release lever down and release the fish-hook catch. It wasn't too difficult to do and fixed the issue Leveraging the unit out using a screwdriver through the VW badge was the hardest bit.
