By the end of 1993, Broudie had completed the third Lightning Seeds album Jollification, which included contributions from Terry Hall, Simon Rogers, Alison Moyet and Ian McNabb. The name derives from a misheard lyric from Prince's 1985 hit single " Raspberry Beret", in which Prince sings the line "thunder drowns out what the lightning sees".

The album Jollification became a critical success [6] and the singles taken from this album, "Lucky You", "Marvellous" and "Perfect" made noticeable impact. Indeed, there is a lot more variety to the charts than gets left on radio in the longer run it seems. It just seems I edit out a lot of the radio records that were in the charts for weeks on end - the true pop music being Top 10 - and instead the songs it turns out I like mostly were in the Top 40 for one or two weeks only or didn't pop their head above no 40 for one classic hit daytime radio play, once and never again - always on the Top 40 show on Sunday afternoon. All songs were written by Ian Broudie, with contributions on some tracks from Alison Moyet, Ian McNabb and Terry Hall. It was when producing a track for The Pale Fountains that Broudie was offered a chance to release some of his own material.Mark Farrow's album cover featured the use of computer graphics to create an enormous strawberry and depicting seeds with superimposed human faces. His new industry friend had a solution: They would press 500 copies of the song and release it on the indie label Rough Trade. During this period a number of songs were recorded at a private river barge studio located at Eel Pie Studios, then owned by Pete Townshend for the fourth studio album Dizzy Heights.
