About this deal

The contrast between the iconic English outfit’s seminal prog-rock period and its chart-topping synthpop era is so glaring that ingesting both extremes in the same sitting would test even the most ardent of fans. The box set is available on 5xCD and 3xLP formats — marking the first time these tracks have been released on vinyl. From the early recordings important parts have been left out and the recording from Wembley 1975 is missing completely except for Watcher Of The Skies.

One that maybe allowed the fans who preferred their mprog of the more traditional persuasion to avoid the pop songs. The most ambitious tracks from this period tower over the stereo field—rising, falling and sprawling outwards like a vast mountain range made of sound. Again, sequencing is not a strong point; the 1981 opening piece, Behind The Lines, is saved till the start of side two. He and founding keyboardist Tony Banks curated the collection, which is packaged with a 40-page booklet.

Then, next to the two Birmingham 98 track descriptions, there is even a photo of Daryl Stuermer and Phil Collins, presumably taken at Knebworth 1990 (whether during Phil's solo set or the Genesis set with Phil Collins' band is unclear). Again, some tracks are missing (these had also been played at Knebworth 78) and The Colony Of Slippermen is titled The Raven on BBC Broadcasts (one of the parts of The Colony Of Slippermen). The omissions are understandable, but frustrating (since it is likely the completist that really wants this set). Lead Vocals [Lead Voice], Bass Drum, Tambourine – Peter Gabriel(tracks: SACD1-1 to DVD1-6, SACD2-1 to DVD2-7, SACD3-1 to DVD3-6.

Likewise, the chorus of “Get ‘Em Out by Friday,” rivals the later material in terms of catchiness; it’s just that the hooks are spread out over eight-plus minutes.The three London concerts at the end of the 1980 UK tour took place on 5 May at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and on 6 and 7 May at the Lyceum Ballroom Theatre. On the third CD we find a Domino motif (known from the tour program), but only the last two tracks on the CD are from Wembley 1987. You can do it that way, but with a little more effort it would have been possible to get much more out of it. Additionally, it includes the first officially released live performances from Ray Wilson's tenure with the band. Turn It On Again (B-side of the US Promo 12" of Turn It On Again, 7 May - on the label it says Drury Lane by mistake).
