She takes you into the history of Daniel Morcombe's killer, the police investigation, and the people involved in the multi-jurisdictional 'Mr Big' sting operation that led to the day they could tell his parents that they had made an arrest. I experienced just about every possible human emotion while reading The Bee Sting, and at an intensity I have not felt with a work of fiction for a long time. Its ambition and scale are astonishing, and as a sheer technical feat of storytelling it is remarkable. Reading it, I was constantly reminded of what the novel as an artform is capable of, and what it is for. It’s just so beautiful, and so bleak and sad. There’s no love in the book. I don’t think the guy was in a good place when he wrote it. I couldn’t have written that book in a million years, but I’m sort of glad I couldn’t. There are loads of writers around, but it’s not social insofar as everybody hangs out together all the time. Dublin is a small city, so it’s certainly harder to think that you’re of any importance. If you’re in New York and you’re hanging out with Colson Whitehead and Patti Smith, maybe you’d get some pretensions. But as it is, we’re all fairly sane. Tommy from as soon as we meet him, I knew was a good lad. His home life isn’t the best and is about to get even worse. My heart broke for him and his sisters for what they have to go through, more so for Tommy. Whilst these aspects are, frankly, bloody awful, there is inspiration in this story. The determination and hard work of some great police members, despite inter-state tensions, and of course, the bravery and sheer guts of Daniel Morcombe's parents Denise and Bruce Morcombe.
