I began with "No Ordinary Day" and quite honestly had a hard time getting through the first chapter because I couldn't quite find the rhythm of the story, and because the imagery was so disturbing to me. This feeling of unease soon passed as I continued on and finished this book in one sitting. I was so moved by the strength, courage, and ingenuity of the main character, Valli, as she made her way through life in India, and I realized that the disturbing imagery was only an aide for me to appreciate the story. I soon began to realise I was in uncharted territory, exploring and researching a subject that would take me into the dark world of our secret services and the equally duplicitous world of UK politics. To begin, I conducted interviews with people who had been present on the day of the shooting and this led to invitations to meet with others who had been involved in the siege and subsequent criminal enquiry. I spoke to journalists, former members of the secret service – including cream-tea with John Le Carré in his home in Cornwall – and others who suggested avenues of research they thought might prove productive. Many, but not all, were prepared to talk, particularly when they learned of my connection to Yvonne. My best witness, by far, was John Murray himself. I found him to be modest, self-effacing and humble but, at the same time, determined and very, very brave. His is a story of sacrifice and loyalty to a friend, and to that promise he made to her is an incredible one.

Jason is in his 30s and is the boyfriend of Claire. Even though the book was short, I felt like I knew Valli. Highly recommended with young readers, I will definitely be saving this one for when my kids are a bit older. This is an important book, a book I would urge you to read. It takes us behind the headlines to the truth of the political decisions that have shaped the past thirty nine years of John Murray’s quest for justice. With the narrative taking us between the UK and Libya, and with a frank and detailed exploration of this case, Matt Johnson has captured the heart of this case, a quest for justice which is not yet over. This is a book which is steeped in fact and conveys the many questionable decisions made without judgment, as such, but that will create strong feeling nonetheless. Be warned – it is likely to make you even angrier at the many political figures who still plague our lives to this day (if that is even possible), as well as act as a reminder that, in spite of the negative headlines that dominate about the Met Police these days, there are many dedicated, and passionate Officers, such as John Murray and Yvonne Fletcher, who should be celebrated and remembered above all else.

I watched the TV coverage as Yvonne died that day. I watched John desperately try to help her. I later looked every one of Yvonne’s murderers in the eye as they filed past me out of the Bureau & onto luxury coaches to be taken to an airport where they boarded a plane & took off to return to Libya. I then watched the TV coverage as they arrived in Tripoli to rapturous and no doubt orchestrated applause from tens of thousands of Libyans, then into a huge cavalcade & driven to a heroes welcome from Gaddafi et al. No Ordinary Day is more than a history book, as it gives the reader a greater insight into those involved, those whose hands were clean, those whose hands were tied and unable to perform their duty, those whose hands were indeed dirty, those who deserved to be punished.
