About this deal

This book was the perfect amount of suspense, action, adventure, and creepiness for any YA and middle-grade reader who loves books like five nights at freddies, Goosebumps, or R L Stine. This book is set in Dread Wood High School and its grounds on a Saturday detention session for four students who got a bit out of control during a lunch break. The start of the book is really exciting and grabs the reader because of the mysterious first chapter. Can Club Loser stop these creatures from escaping into the world and make it out of the tunnels in one piece?

This book does have a nice dollop of humour and, under it's spidery body, there is a heart and this does touch on dark subject matter such as child poverty, bullying, disability, pressure from parents, and a few others, which shows that our leads aren't bad, but are fleshed out and there are reasons for the way they behave and react. I like how amidst the horror there was laughter (particularly from Gus who is a funny character) and friendship.

Not for the faint-hearted, this edge-of-seat horror is hard to put down, with many chapters ending on a cliff-hanger. Creepy things lurk in the shadows, indescribable nasties leap out when least expected and death, or worse, awaits anyone who dares to put a foot to the ground. Okay, I don't know how I didn't notice that there are like a thousand spiders on the cover of this book, but I didn't. I read the chapter from the second book in the series which was included at the end of my eARC, and I have a feeling that my desire of knowing more about Dread Wood will be sated quite soon. There is something strange happening at the school and if the kids don’t contain it more people could be in danger.

For our cast we have Spunky Girl, Cautious Girl, Comedy Relief Guy and Narrator, whose primary character trait seems to be that he’s poor. Nevertheless, I powered through and found myself wanting to know answers to several questions mentioned throughout. As it turns out, they all have personal struggles and it actually bonds them together as they learn more about each other. Are you telling me one of them is always stood on the school field whistling or humming so an errant dog sized spider doesn’t gobble up an unsuspecting student? I didn’t expect a lot of the plots and the revelations were well done and definitely surprised me as I would have never expected the direction it went.A group of twelve year old class mates whose Saturday morning detention turns into a terrifying battle for survival within the grounds of their school Dead Wood High. The foursome think things couldn’t get any worse, that is until their teacher is dragged underground, animals go missing and the creepy caretaker follows them humming the tune to Incy Wincy spider. Cut off from help and in danger each time they touch the ground, the gang’s only hope is to work together. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Gustav is described as "walking chaos", Naria being the "uptight, overachiever", and Hallie as "vegetarian, an LGBTQ+ ally, and welcome of refugees.
