About this deal

At first: Where silicone once was something else wouldn´t adhere unless the surface is sanded properly.

Over the years (55+) surveying, I inspected many dismastings and partials because of partial and full bulkheads shreading apart, the ones that did retain the rig was only because the chain plate bolts caught on the bottom side of the deck. I like the design of my boat, the space, and the way it handle in rough weather, and I like to keep it if possible. Finally I´ve found most of the Balsa core intact and dry but eventually three holes have been severely attacked by the moisture.The very two chain plates which have caused the core in the beams to partially disintegrate have done much more damage to the roof.

Honestly it'll be better, and probably easier, to replace the whole piece rather than trying to scarf in a section. And having water coming down the chain plates, having seen some of the bolts covered in silicone I had the impression that maybe some of the moisture did as well creep into the wooden core of the sandwich-construction. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. So like a dentist with his hellish instruments I was probing through the screw-holes into the core of the beams. Over the years these constant different forces will create tiny rifts through which water will and can leak into the boat itself.The chain keeper will bridge the gap from the open door to where the magnet is mounted and can be cut down to size. After putting some 3 hours of work into this first step of working on the chain plates of my sailing yacht I concluded work and sat down to think of the next steps to go in this part of the refit program.

The chain plate itself is screwed tightly with five bolts each to a counter part on the opposite side of the beam. Trying hard to remove the old silicone on one instance I took out a huge piece of an even older provisional filling of the gone Balsa core. When exposed to constant moisture – as it is the case when used trying to seal the duct of the chain plates – it will rather soak and swell and quickly loose it´s (nevertheless poor) sealing qualities.Shrouds deviate those forces into the chain plates which for themselves should be fitted tightly to the hull where the forces will be finally absorbed. The boat has leaked water through some ports, and the through the chain plate area, which holds the standing rigging of the mast. One end of the chainplate is normally fastened to a turnbuckle which is connected to the shroud or stay, whereas the remainder of the chainplate normally has multiple holes that are bolted to the hull, or the chains. And, BTW, when the assembly is dis-assembled, I would consider non destructive testing of the chainplate itself. Number 1, there is a good chance of crevice corrosion on some bolts and definitely where the chain plate passes through the deck.

The OP said it was a triangle so I assume it goes down the hull behind the settee which is bonded to the hull and part of the cabinetry. Unless the middle layer isn´t made of foam but of Balsa wood instead there´s a danger of the wood to simply rot. Water on the chainplate without the presence of sufficient oxygen can cause inter granular corrosion of the stainless. I spoke to my surveyor about it and he wanted me to drill a few 1” holes to see if the water had penetrated the wood. On port side I found the core of the roof gone in a radius of up to 10 centimeters, starboard side is a bit less severe but again I too out a lot of wet shreds of rotten Balsa wood.The material sandwiched in the hull tabbing and down inside the cabinetry is what supports the rigging through the chain plate. Google West Epoxy or Fibre Glast 2000 resin for details but I am sure there are European equivalents.
