Chocolate needed: It loves thin pieces of chocolate, so shards are ideal. Small chocolate buttons and drops can be more problematic to melt but are possible. It's able to handle both hot and cold milk, so making cold frothed milkshakes is also an option. Bear in mind that you can't make a chocolate milkshake from scratch using real chocolate as without heat, there's no way for the chocolate to melt. Here's another red machine that'll either blend or jar with your kitchen décor. The machine, from Italian coffee wizards Lavazza, is noticeably bulkier than other gadgets on this list.

To replicate that same froth for oat milk, and all other plant-based milks, you have to buy the 'barista' version which has added stabilisers to mimic the fats found in cow's milk. Overall: ★★★★☆. This is a good looking gadget that looks to be the most versatile in terms of chocolate used to make drinks, as it can handle squares of chocolate and not just flakes. A microwave can heat up milk to boiling point, but much like the saucepan above, it needs constant supervision so as not to make a right royal mess. Versatility: ★★★★★. The hob, saucepan, and whisk can all be used to produce other wonderful things, like sauces and gravies, hot milk, custard, and oodles of other tasty treats.

Overall: ★★★★☆. A great price, it looks good, it can handle a wide range of milks, and it can make me a hot chocolate. What's not to love? The nights are drawing in and that can mean only one thing - it's hot chocolate season! I love this time of year, when the variety of hot chocolates burst onto the marketplace just in time for Christmas. A while... This was my favourite: an old-fashioned aluminium stove-top jug with a plunger lid to pump and froth and a protective silicone mat. The instructions are nicely loose and straight: you fill the pot up to just below the bottom of the handle, preferably with whole milk (semi or skimmed won’t froth so well) and gently heat on the burner (gas or electric) until the milk is bubbling around the edges, then add in your chocolate – the manual suggests a cocoa mix (I use Cadbury’s powdered hot chocolate) or a grated handful of real chocolate – quantities unspecified – and stir.

Choose from four colours, including charcoal, copper, platinum and the stellar white. The Velvetiser has a great handle so whether you’re right or left handed, you can pour drinks easily. It’s extremely stylish and takes up minimal space in your kitchen. It can sit next to your kettle or you can tidy it away neatly and compactly. Glamour: ★★★★★. It's absolutely stunning, especially in copper. It's also available in trendy grey and white if that's your thing.
