The vampire is a mythical, at least to my knowledge, creature that has appeared in fiction for centuries. Throughout those centuries, a few things have remained consistent about vampires: They have fangs, they can’t go out in the sun, they are immortal, they need to be invited into houses, they can fly, they are generally driven by a thirst for human blood. But one must not forget perhaps the most important trait of vampires: They are very, very hot. Quentin Tarantino sparked renewed interest in this Spanish horror film, putting it on many of his top ten lists and naming a chapter of his “Kill Bill Vol. 1” book after it. DirectorVicente Aranda, the film attained cult status not only for its erotic horror themes, but for its rejection of fascism in Francoist Spain. Dracula’s Bride (Monica Bellucci)/Bram Stokers Dracula (1992): There were a few vampire beauties in this Dracula film so it took something special to stand out. Monica Bellucci has that something. I wish I knew what it was. In any case, she doesn’t really talk but she slides up between your legs while you’re in bed minding your own business and she eats babies. SOLD! Titled “ A Woman’s Bite: Cinema’s Sapphic Vampires,” the series also complements an excellent Jean Rollin retrospective, Très Outré: The Sinister Visions of Jean Rollin, the French horror auteur who put women at the center of his lush, gothic cinema. “A Woman’s Bite” runs October 26-November 1 at The Quad.I learned a few things on this journey, mainly that most vampires are excruciatingly hot in a way that makes me feel bad and compromises my morals. The remaining draw is the love story itself. This is a highly romanticized version of Dracula. I think most people like to believe that “love never dies” and someone might pine for them so powerfully they would “cross oceans of time to find them.” This is ultimately a story about the timelessness of love and the promise of it’s immortal kiss. The remaining family members are not without charm. A standing ovation goes to Bill Paxton who plays Severen. Severen is a handsome, if compelling, brute. He’s not a character for the faint of heart but for those of us who are left breathless by bad boys he has a certain unquestionable charm and the writers had the good sense to imbibe his character with some of the best quips of the film, which Paxton delivers effortlessly. Stealing scene after scene. But Salma Hayek dancing with a snake in a bikini in From Dusk Till Dawn is a cultural moment that is too often ignored.

Mexican cult horror directorJuan López Moctezuma castCristina Ferrare, later a top TV host, as a bisexual artist who visits Mexico with a bloodthirsty mission. The film stars John Carradine as her estranged vampire father, and features cinematography byMiguel Garzón (“Highway Patrolman,”“Red Dawn”). The story begins with a sweet displaced divorcee named Lucy (played beautifully by Dianne Wiest), trying to make a fresh start for herself and her two teen boys, Sam (Corey Haim) and Michael (Jason Patric) by moving them all in to the boys' creepily weird grandfather’s (Emmy and Tony Award-winner Barnard Hughes) house in Santa Carla, California. It’s a quaint little beach side town with all the standard tourist traps like a boardwalk, carnival rides and musty old bookstores as well as a very high homicide rate. Eddie Murphy is a hot and suave vampire in Wes Craven’s cult classic about Maximillian, a smooth-talking Caribbean vampire who ends up in Brooklyn and attempts to romance a detective (Angela Bassett) investigating a crime scene he’s responsible for. Maximillian’s look is a little more classic vampire, but make it ’90s, with that long hair, oversized overcoat, a scarf, and a little hoop earring. If Maximillian were walking around Brooklyn today, you would probably just note his cool outfit and move along.Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the definitive vampire story of the 1990s — the Gen X Twilight, if you will. And it was on the WB, so it was filled with hotties. Spike was a bad boy turned good one. As a human, he was a (unsuccessful) romantic poet, which is kind of hot even though it’s annoying. Then he became a vicious vampire and then a ’90s heartthrob guaranteed to make anyone weak in the knees, but especially Buffy herself and teenagers in 1999. The implication is that she is deeply repressed. Where does all that repression go? It's often directed inward in the form of erotic dreams where inhibitions and public criticism are stripped away.Most of these dreams are being spurred on by Martin, including a full on partially drug induced orgy and blood bath with fellow college co-eds.The idea that many of the vampire encounters seem like dreams rather than actual visitations is a big part of this movies appeal. Directed by Michael Almereyda (“Twister”) and starring Elina Löwensohn as Nadja and Peter Fonda as Van Helsing, this ’90s arthouse horror features a David Lynch cameo as a morgue attendant. Lynch also lends his name as executive producer. With another spooky season upon us, I have been asked to do the unthinkable: rank the hot vampires from movies and television by their hotness. I can’t really explain the methodology behind this heavily curated ranking of hot vampires that gave me several migraines, except to say that every vampire on this list had to be a vampire and had to be hot. I started with a list of almost 100 vampires from movies and TV shows and eliminated as I saw fit, cutting some human characters who only became vampires late in their stories (Elena Gilbert of The Vampire Diaries, Bella Swan of The Twilight Saga), the boring vampires (Elena Gilbert , Bella Swan ), and Tom Cruise from Interview with the Vampire. I favored unexpected choices because while you’re reading a blog about hot people, you may as well learn something. Essentially, there is nothing scientific to this. I simply made a list of vampires and then decided who, according to me, is hot enough to be on it. Of course, hotness includes not just looks, but personality, style, and, perhaps most importantly, hair. But when Elijah Mikaelson pulls this signature move, we very much like to see it, especially if blood gets in his hair, which is as delicious to me as my blood is to him. Elijah has a soft spot for the underdog, a quality that absolutely factors into hotness, and he is the star of the hottest GIF of all time, which you know intimately if you had a Tumblr phase. Frank Langella delivers a groundbreaking performance as the lead and master of all “Dracula” movies. He is riveting and reels with a sexual presence and sophisticated charm which renders all other Dracula movies null and void. Kate Nelligan is a young, beautiful and capable heroine as the focal point of love that transcends death and time. Laurence Olivier is a smart Van Helsing who makes a worthy opponent. The remaining ensemble round things out by delivering superb performances, making this a Gothic masterpiece with an atmosphere which is genuinely creepy.Is perpetual horniness the hottest quality a person could have? Absolutely not. But Laszlo, who visits libraries (hot) for the pornography, almost has me convinced that it is. Winona Rider plays our innocent heroin Mina, the near divine love of Dracula’s dark heart. She has a lovely allure, ensconced in rich Victorian gowns and heaving bodice. She makes the perfect sacrificial innocent to Oldmans ancient evil. This B-horror movie is rather famous though not for the reasons you might think. The plot is sparse, most of the acting is sub par and the visual effects are ridiculous. It’s famous because drop dead gorgeous Alyssa Milano gets naked in multiple scenes and she’s not the only one. I actually like Alyssa Milano and think she’s a fairly decent actress. If you are a fan of her bodacious bod as well you MUST see this film..uncut of course. Based on the French novella “Carmilla,” which would also inspire Hammer Films’ Karnstein Trilogy a decade later, “Blood and Roses” is notable for launching Roger Vadim’s fruitful collaboration with cinematographer Claude Renoir, who would later shoot Vadim’s cult classic, “Barbarella.” StarringMel Ferrer as Leopoldo De Karnstein and Elsa Martinelli as Georgia Monteverdi.
