There are pros and cons of each of these coffee grinders and it all depends on the type of brew method you use, the precision of grind you desire and your budget.

This machine’s precision conical burrs minimize grind heat and protect essential oils where fresh coffee flavor resides. There are 40 numbered settings to choose from (coarse to fine grind), each one marked by a dash – match your desired type of coffee to the right number by consulting the ‘grind size guide’ in the user manual.This is a little twist in the story, but fear not, it's a story with a happy ending, and it turned out that it was me that was broken. It's worth pointing out, also, that if you're asking the question about grind size, this only really makes any difference if you're using freshly roasted coffee beans. Setting up the grinder is easy, thanks to the comprehensive manual, and the experienced coffee maker will find their way around easily. Just below you will find a grinding chart for the different brewing methods, when using the Sage Dose Grinder. Crafted from cast aluminium and complete with a bamboo cup for collecting coffee grounds, this was the most comfortable hand grinder to use by far.

Grinds were noticeably consistent (on a par with both the Smeg and Sage models) and it was easy to remove the steel burr for cleaning. If you have taken the time with your KG79 to get it where you want it, then I would stick with it until it stops working. I would recommend only leaving enough coffee in the hopper for two or three days worth of espresso and keeping the rest in an airtight coffee container. Espresso machines require a very fine grind, cafetières are best filled with coarse granules, and filter coffee should be somewhere in-between.I hear from people who drop their internal setting to 3 or even lower, one reader told me they'd taken it to 1. So if you don't need the espresso capability, it's fair to say that purely talking about grinding performance, you're probably not going to experience a great deal of difference in the cup from your extra spend.
