About this deal

A big part of the fun of reading Eversion comes from trying to piece together the puzzles and understand what's going on. I can't really say much about Eversion without giving too much away, although I will say you may want to skip even the synopsis and just go in on blind faith that Reynolds knows how to tell a good story. This is a SF novel, which starts as a historical novel about naval exploration, but then grows to something more. It becomes a kind of journey of exposition and self-discovery—and that has merit, I would agree, but it doesn’t hold interest as much as the tension of the first half did for me. Hachette Book Group is a leading book publisher based in New York and a division of Hachette Livre, the third-largest publisher in the world.

Silas Coade is the assistant surgeon (well, only surgeon) aboard the Demeter, a sailing ship bound for the coast of Norway. But even beyond that, there’s just an epicness to the difference pieces that make up this novel, from the harrowing maritime setting of the 1800s, to the steampunkish elements of adventure aboard an early twentieth century airship, and finally to the high-tech starship in the vast expanse of outer space. I had to flick back to the information page as I was sure I had seen it was a Reynolds story but the beginning didn't seem anything like past reads. From 1991 until 2007, he lived in The Netherlands, where he was employed by The European Space Agency as an astrophysicist. It was engaging from the very beginning, small hints that something is not right with these situations and trying to uncover what exactly is going on.It sounds different enough from his other stuff too… my only experience was with PErmafrost, which also was a departure from his usual fare? Alastair Reynolds has already proved himself a master of intelligent space opera such as Shadow Captain - with Eversion he enters more exotic territory, giving us an SF novel where things are much more weird and wonderful, and he succeeds equally well here. Clarke Award; Revelation Space, Absolution Gap, Diamond Dogs, and Century Rain were shortlisted for the British Science Fiction Award, and Chasm City won the British Science Fiction Award. At each stage of this mystery, the characters reveal different facets of their personalities and inner drives. It is replaced by an exploratory steamer working the coast of Antarctica, with similar characters and circumstances, but more sophisticated technology.

I think I went into this one a little too excited to get to the part of the story that actually felt like science fiction, instead of enjoying the journey as much as I could have otherwise done. In each of the episodes, Silas adopts a voice redolent of the period: something out of Patrick O’Brian in the 18th-century installment, then Victorian diction, then snappy patter from the pulps, and so on.Coade spends a good deal of time wondering about it, then double-guessing himself, and then actively trying to figure out, what exactly might be going on. I want to thank Orbit and Net Galley for an advance review copy of Eversion as the basis for this review, which reflects solely my own opinions. This is a novel that's elegantly plotted, full of surprises and, as first time round, rip-roaring fun. In successive versions of the story, the group comes to blows but nevertheless gets closer and closer to setting foot inside the vast structure. Starts quite interestingly and the first half is excellent with lots of cool stuff, inventiveness, and making one want to turn pages to see where it goes next, but then it kind of peters out in a predictable storyline (wouldn't want to say more not to spoil it), though the ending at least is good. I understand the weirdness of the beginning now but it is difficult to know how the author could have made it better given the overall plot. But the summary of this book intrigued me enough to have me taking a chance on it, and it ended up checking all the boxes for me and truly exceeding my expectations.What does human identity consist of, in its essence, and when is it legitimate to sacrifice a life for the greater good? In fact, the first chapter of Century Rain was included after the conclusion of this novel as a teaser. And in the distant future, he is the doctor aboard a spaceship investigating a mysterious artifact in space. This does sound very different from anything else I’ve read by him and I’d very much like to give it a try. After being grounded in several incarnations of exploration ships, having twisted myself up with the great characterizations, I have to say that I came out of this a bit inside-out, as well.
