About this deal

The extended 90mm focal length allows macro photography at greater distances from the subject as compared to the Olympus 30mm and 60mm macros (or any other shorter focal length macro for that matter). The larger gap allows better positioning of artificial lighting and configuration of the tripod. I used the OM System 90mm f3.5 Macro with the OM-1. I also tried out the 2x and 1.4x teleconverters to see how well they pair with the lens. A few photos were also shot with the Flashpoint R200 Ring Flash with the eVolve 200 Pro. All these products were loaner units provided to the Phoblographer. I paired the OM 90mm macro lens with the OM System OM-1 camera and excitedly headed to the garden in search of tiny subjects of interest, like fungi and insects. It’s a camera and lens pairing that I’ve had a decent length of time with and got a good feel for what’s possible, and the pleasure hasn’t worn off.

That said, the sound of the autofocus motor reminded me of dial-up internet. Grrr—ehhh—rrr-eeee. The motor isn’t going to be audible across the room, but tiny subjects might take notice of the noise.On distant subjects, I actually found that the OM System 90mm f/3.5 Macro IS PRO outperformed my old M.Zuiko 60mm f/2.8 macro in focus speed, especially in brighter conditions. However, at close focusing distances, the 60mm lens was faster – probably because it didn’t need to examine the whole range from 2:1 to wider magnifications. The 90mm Macro lens is over 2 inches longer and .5 inches bigger in diameter than the 60mm macro. So, if you have a custom diffuser like the CygnusTech, it may not fit on this lens. In addition, I don't understand your reasoning on its value for pushing down an objective. As you know, the FOV of an objective on MFT with a 90mm tube lens is about the same as the FOV of the same objective on a 180mm tube lens on FF. This is very close to the the FOV you get with the same objective and a 200mm tube lens on FF. In other words, this new 90mm lens, if it does not vignette, almost exactly replaces the 200mm + FF system. That's very useful. And it hardly counts as pushing down, in terms of lines per FOV. Lns per mm is not the appropriate measure when comparing across sensor sizes.

The 90mm is almost 9.5 ounces heavier than the 60mm macro. This is a Pro lens with Sync IS and improved weatherproofing so the extra weight makes sense. But if you a looking for a lightweight lens, the Olympus 60mm macro might be a better fit. The integral 5-axis image stabilization is modestly named because when used with a compatible camera body, axis synch-IS is engaged and the combo delivers up to 7 stops of shutter speed compensation. Focus Limit Switch sets the focusing range to define focus limits to enable faster focusing when shooting, improving AF speed.In particular, when shooting at2x magnification with the OM System M.Zuiko 90mm f/3.5 Macro IS PRO, the tip of the lens is about 6.5 cm / 2.5 inches from the subject. At 1x magnification, this distance increases to 9.5 cm / 3.7 inches. The OM System 90mm f3.5 Macro IS Pro proves that the Micro Four Thirds system still has clout in an era of full-frame mirrorless. This macro lens does what a full-frame camera can’t do — use autofocus at a 4x equivalent macro. The 90mm is the kind of landmark lens that may even be big enough to sway some photographers over to the Micro Four Thirds system. While I found most of the images acceptably sharp, I did tend to push the sharpness slider in post a little further than usual when working with RAW files. What do the images look like with a teleconverter? If you are a serious nature macro photograph, this lens is well worth considering. The extra reach and working distance, compatibility with Olympus teleconverters for extra magnification, and other features listed above may be well worth the price.
