About this deal

I love people watching and eavesdropping, I find society and culture fascinating, and so living in London and always being surrounded by the hustle and bustle and conversations and interesting people, I often wish I had an invisibility cloak so I could just follow people around and see inside their lives. Forbat admits to having “tried on lots of different versions” of herself “to please everyone all the time – which is an impossible feat. Even those who have a propensity towards frugality may find themselves splurging simply by virtue of leaving the house.

Her podcast Adulting – about all of the things we never got taught in school – has been downloaded over 4 million times. I only brought a few books with me on holiday so I tried to read this one super slowly as I knew I’d have nothing left when I finished, but it was really hard. This episode Grace talks to influencer and podcaster Oenone Forbat about struggles with body image while growing up, therapy, and the trouble with Instagram vs mental health. A very modern journey not just of interest to her contemporaries, but also to older women like myself, unfamiliar with the social media influencing world. By questioning whether her followers needed her to post materials such as social justice infographics to show her genuine awareness for a cause, or because it was simply something that everyone else has shared, Forbat explores how platforms capitalise upon and manipulate sincere passion for social problems into a way to build social brands. Two years later, I had my second cornea transplant at Moorfields Hospital followed by lens implants to further perfect my vision and after a long recovery of stitch removal and high ocular pressure, I was finally able to see properly unaided, to read and to work to the best of my ability. She is a big influencer in the book industry, offering a monthly online book club where she discusses the latest releases, her favourite reads and the problems with some books. Although it will be difficult to choose only one winner from such a stunning shortlist, I’m really looking forward to discussing these wonderful books with my fellow judges. I would hope anyone and everyone with a passing interest in social media, online communities or modern culture would enjoy it so highly recommend. This is one of those impossible questions, but one that has stayed with me and that I adored is City Of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert.

Just because a lot of us feel like saying "f*** it", it doesn’t mean we aren’t also trying our best to stay afloat, swimming against the tide, rather than succumbing to drowning in our own whimsies. I didn’t necessarily learn anything about the industry that I didn’t already know but maybe that’s because I’ve always been curious about it and maybe because I already follow oenone quite closely but there’s a few things in there where I was shocked to learn about her personal!

Through the writing process, she was “very conscious” about making sure she wasn’t “overly generous with super personal details,” but also carefully considered what she “was happy” and comfortable “with sharing. Such a fascinating insight into building a career through influencing and how hard it can be and how different it is from what you imagine from just following influencers lives on Instagram. It helped that I was now in full-time employment and my employer was really understanding of my situation so I was able to fully recover. Its a chance to feel a part of something bigger than yourself whilst simultaneously giving you the freedom to be yourself.
