They were known for their voodoo-like magic, their black eyes (which glow red when they are angry), and their ability to sit for hours and days on end without moving or blinking. Each of the Ainur had added his or her own part to the music creating the world incarnate, save for Melkor, who at the time was counted as the strongest of them. Following the creation, the fourteen Valar dwelt first on Almaren, a hidden island on the Great Lake, but, after it was destroyed and the earth was reshaped, long before the Awakening of the Elves, they relocated to Aman and founded the realm of Valinor.
At this time, there were three breeds, or tribes, of Hobbits, with different physical characteristics and temperaments: Harfoots, Stoors and Fallohides. Hobbits are a race of Middle-earth, also known as 'halflings' on account of their short stature, roughly half the size of men.Much of these materials have been published in Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-earth, The Children of Húrin, Beren and Lúthien and The Fall of Gondolin, which were all edited by Christopher Tolkien during his lifetime. What success they had I do not know; but I fear that they failed, as Saruman did, though doubtless in different ways; and I suspect they were founders or beginners of secret cults and 'magic' traditions that outlasted the fall of Sauron. I’ve just seen an announcement that a 400-page book of Tolkien’s late musings on his secondary world, edited by Carl Hostetter, is due next year. Although they were inclined to be fat and did not hurry unnecessarily, they were also nimble and deft in their movements. However, Tolkien also wrote other accounts of their origin, [T 9] in an attempt to resolve the dilemma of how they could be sentient and wholly evil.
