(Image credit: Adam Juniper/Digital Camera World) We’re told the Mavic 3 Pro (or, perhaps, the Pro 3/3 Pro), will feature 8K video resolution. To us, this makes perfect sense, given that the original Mavic Pro, released in late September 2016, had 4K resolution and the AIR 2S has 5.4K resolution. The Mavic 3 Pro Series includes DJI’s first tri-camera flagship drones with multiple focal lengths. It uses the same wide-angle 4/3 CMOS Hasselblad camera as Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Classic. Compared with Mavic 3, it adds a 1/1.3-inch CMOS 70mm medium tele camera with 48MP effective pixels. It also has an upgraded 1/2-inch CMOS 166mm tele camera with 12MP effective pixels, providing more flexible aerial photography perspectives while enhancing creative efficiency and freedom.

The Mavic 3 is around the same size as the Mavic 2, though opens out a little larger. Every version is supplied with a clip-round case to protect the handsome camera gimbal (assuming you can live without symmetry). Getting it on and off takes a little getting used to but gives that professional feel the device deserves and solves the issue of flapping props and at-risk cameras in drones of similar proportions. It’s no harder than the clip-on plastic protectors on other models, but it’s doing more work. In addition, the Mavic 3 Pro Series also supports the Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution (HNCS), D-Log, D-Log M, HLG, and other color modes, which retain more image details and facilitate more efficient color grading in post-production. APAS 4.0 is not available while recording 4K/48fps, 4K/50fps, 4K/60fps, 2.7K/48fps, 2.7K/50fps, 2.7K/60fps and 1080p/120fps video. We’ve even seen an image – we don’t know how legit – that shows a Mavic-like product that includes an array of visual sensors in very similar configuration to the Skydio 2: The above figure is for reference only. Due to different production batches, DJI provides two kinds of gimbal protectors that are slightly different in appearance. The two gimbal protectors have the same function and can be used in the same way.

Introduction

There’s no question that DJI is the global market leader for consumer and Enterprise drones, selling the commanding majority of products sold on the planet (somewhere between 70 and 80%). But DJI is also very watchful of competition, wanting to always stay ahead of the game. The folded dimensions of the Mavic 3 are 212×96.3x90.3mm, while its unfolded size is 347.5×283x107.7 mm. This makes it similar to the Mavic 2 Pro when folded, with the unfolded size being slightly larger. This controller is larger than the older foldable Mavic 2 controller, but the advantage is improved battery life of up to six hours. The RC Pro controller (above) that comes with the Cine version of the Mavic 3 is essentially a new Smart Controller with a 5.5in touchscreen and offers several other advanced features compared to the standard controller. Strangely, DJI says that while the existing DJI Mavic 3 will remain on sale, it won't be producing that drone any more. This explains why the DJI Mavic 3 Pro's pricing is similar to the Mavic 3. That’s what everyone is wondering. We have some information from our source, and some speculation based on competition and industry knowledge. First, let’s go with what we’ve discussed with our source. The success of the Mavic line led to other machines; a bunch of other machines; split semi-roughly along consumer and more prosumer lines. On the consumer front, we saw the Mavic AIR, the Mavic Mini, the Mavic AIR 2, the Mini 2, and the AIR 2S. (Those last two seem to mark a departure for DJI in the naming department. Despite the clear form factor heritage, the company has dropped the “Mavic” name.) The extra hovering time available combined with the number of options available does encourage hovering with eyes away from the aircraft which isn’t an approach recommended by many aviation authorities. But more than that, it was the beginning of a new way of thinking around form and function. The Mavic Pro was immensely more portable than the Phantom line, folding down to a really compact size. It also had better flight time, and a much smaller and innovative controller. And while that controller may look slightly dated now against the current crop (Mavic AIR 2, AIR 2S controllers), it was really compact, and got the job done. Branching outThe release of the Mavic 3 series is long-awaited and for the most part, it delivers. My disappointment comes from the fact that more abilities to customize your photo settings weren't included. DJI periodically updates its firmware, so the company could surprise us in the future. And since they never cannibalize their product line, I can't help but wonder what's next? What's yet to come might offer the Hasselblad color profile, an optical zoom, and possibly even interchangeable lenses on an aircraft that can easily be carried around. So that was the start. In addition to the 4K video, the original Mavic Pro also worked with the original DJI Goggles, those white ones. They were a little clunky then, but the image quality was terrific and that was also something of a breakthrough. People trying them out at the NYC launch event were blown away. Remember these? And while the AIR 2S does a really good job, professional cinematographers want more. The Pro versions With its low latency, higher resolution and greater range compared with OcuSync 2.0, we’d expect a minimum of OcuSync 3.0 – if not, possibly, the next generation. We also theorize (and we could be wrong here) that any drone equipped with OcuSync 3.0 should be compatible with the Goggles V2. It’s really just a question of whether DJI would want to enable that.
