Amazing coffee table book of futurist Syd mead's design work for Blade Runner, Star Trek and countless others. A metaphor for immigration and class struggle, the cylindrical space habitat is a utopian world of lakes, mountains and high living. I would also have loved to see much more historical or contextual background information instead of the descriptions of what we see. I got the impression that multiple long words, constructed in a typical winding description about motive and comparison to more spiritual and ethereal drives behind the work would be suitable instead of the word "cyberpunk" or "noir" or a whole host of other little helpful devices, and so ultimately I felt him trying to distance himself from the people that used that language.

From March 18th through March 31st, Syd Mead enjoyed the hospitality and new found friendship of Australians as he traveled with Roger Servick by train and by plane to four of the best cities in the world. His vision changed our culture, our collective perception of what is possible, and inspired so many of us today. In the interim, he was asked to work at a new studio in Albuquerque by the former head of studio at Alexander Film Co. Technical expertise is admirable, but for a movie you have to go over the top of reality, otherwise it doesn’t look like it should.If you’re a fan of Mead’s work, Visual Futurist features large sections dedicated to his most popular works. But he’s best remembered for work he began in his 40s: creating the futurescapes of Blade Runner (set in 2019), Tron, Aliens, and more. Beginning in 1983, Syd began to develop close working relationships with a number of major Japanese corporate clients, including; Sony, Minolta, Dentsu, Dyflex, Tiger, Seibu, Mitsukoshi, Bandai, NHK, and Honda as well as contributing to two Japanese film projects, The New Yamato and Crises 2050. Syd Mead was a world builder the likes of which cinema had never seen, and probably won't see again.

Rephrasing in language the feelings that the visuals generated is difficult and the text didn't really do it for me. Designing weapons and rocket ships and all these things I’ve worked on, you have to make sure they look like they’re capable of doing what the storyline says they are… and that’s why they hire me. His cities are so powerfully streamlined that one almost expects them to launch into orbit, or at least go from zero to 60 in 7 seconds flat. His body of work, as well as his more recent lectures and training courses, have inspired at least two generations of designers, including some of the most prominent designers of today, and he represents one of the few cases – if not the only – where a brand new definition was coined – Visual Futurist. So when I found out that a book was coming out that celebrates his work in the movies -from the famous (I know his work on the flying car in Blade Runner - the spinner - and the creation of the Sulaco in Aliens) to the never been seen before - I just had to have a copy of it.A great testament to Mead, but also not complete by any means and is in dire need of an expanded edition. This book is an amazing catalogue of work that Syd Mead has done - I just wish it went in to more depth but then again is that not the sign of a great book that what ever they give you are left wanting more.

In the same year, Mead created what would become an iconic image of the 1980s, Number Five the robot, the friendly star of the film Short Circuit. The books were our sales force and catalogue, and kept our presence worldwide while normal design account work was in progress.Like many creators, much of his original work never made it into final form and onto the big screen. Hard to read captions paired with other art with no explanation makes most of the book skipable but some of his well known projects (Aliens, Tron, Blade Runner) worth the read. In 1993, a digital gallery consisting of 50 examples of his art with interface screens designed by him became one of the first CD-ROMs released in Japan. This optimism was probably one of the driving factor of his ability to envision a future we’d love to live in. His generosity of spirit was enormous and leaves the indelible impression of an artist who cared deeply about his own craft, but equally in the craft of current and future artists who would build upon his achievements.

A very nice collection of movie work from the great Syd Mead, marred by shallow, often waffly, and frequently inaccurate text.From the clunky, utilitarian vehicles on the streets to the hulking megatowers that dominate the skyline, it’s a city that’s both a vision of the future and grounded in the modern day. He always tried to make sure that people knew that was not his idea of the future, that was Philip K. This will remain on my bookshelf on the strength of Syd's art, but I will have to seek out additional books to complete my look at his amazing work in more detail. Such a pleasure to interview him for my BLADE RUNNER and ALIENS docs, and I'll forever be inspired by his visionary art.
