About this deal

Juice begins as a snapshot movie, capturing the seemingly mundane, everyday comings-and-goings of its four lead characters. Obviously, that’s a more recent film, but plenty of films from this time, if not older, have featured a great handle on presenting their audio tracks in a way that shows off the music, in addition to the other elements. Juice, which released in the pre-digital photography era in 1992, features a very handsome and natural 1080p transfer.

I can only think that because it's only for NA release they've cheaped out on the encoding and farmed it out to the B (or C) team rather than their usual people? Juice features a hip and happening soundtrack from the golden era of Hip-Hop, but it's not particularly dazzling here.all of these great young actors were handled with the sure hand of Dickerson's steady direction and smart screenplay. It’s a front heavy mix, but there is quite a bit of surround nuances that come from the street scuffles, and the heavy club scene where Q does his turntable magic.

With this in mind, while the film plays like a fascinating portrayal of culture in Harlem in the early 90s, the switch up midway through the movie turns Juice into something of a genre picture. Part of that has to do with my feeling Menace II Society and Boyz n the Hood are better-made films that this one doesn’t often come to mind other than to state the obvious “Tupac was amazing in it!

Dickerson's film is notable for being chockfull of '90s hip hop, both on the soundtrack and in the cast. Noise/Artifacts: Some minor artifacts likely the result of this being a transfer from an old print, but nothing that truly upsets the film. There’s that underlying message of the fleeting lusts of the street, but the heavy 90s “Salt n’ Peppa” style music and the old 90s gangsta lingo makes it a little harder to take seriously than it really should be. Juice holds up as something of a star-making performance for Tupac Shakur, a compelling portrait of urban youth, and an appealing showcase of '90s hip hop.
