Thorne sent me a copy of his new book, The Science of Interstellar, and encouraged me to read it and reconsider my criticisms.

The film began development in June 2006, when Spielberg and Paramount Pictures announced plans for a science-fiction film based on an eight-page treatment written by Obst and Thorne. In this book, the major characters were sent into an exciting and suspenseful journey to find a planet that can sustain human life. This business of the enormous time differential between one of the planets orbiting very close to Gargantua and the flow of time back on Earth – the problem seemed to be that no planet could endure the resulting gravitational forces. We’d always find some way to make things work together, though in this one instance of faster-than-light travel I gave him a series of reasons why we were quite certain the laws of physics prevented it. So, let's put things clear from now: If you haven't watched the movie, go do it before you read the book.On Earth, a dying Brand confesses to Murph that he lied about the viability of Plan A, dooming Earth's population knowingly. Nuclear-pulse propulsion, laser-powered light sails, binary black hole slingshots, things like that. This one, however, was probably the best one I've read, and really expanded on the movie with the descriptions of what was actually going on in between the characters' dialogue. She was suspended from school because she did not believe the textbooks' claim that the moon missions had been faked.

The tesseract is the most highly speculative portion of the film, but is nevertheless partially explained by higher-dimensional geometry. New York Times columnist David Brooks concludes that Interstellar explores the relationships among "science and faith and science and the humanities" and "illustrates the real symbiosis between these realms. As breath-taking and surreal as the film itself, the novelisation of “Interstellar” brilliantly fuses movie dialogues with its thematic wonderment. It's a direct from-the-movie version, so there's little by way of new insights into the characters or more background or motivations.The astrobiologist David Grinspoon criticized the dire "blight" situation on Earth portrayed in the early scenes, pointing out that even with a voracious blight it would have taken millions of years to reduce the atmosphere's oxygen content.
