That said, one can see why Maugham was a respected man of letters in British 20th Century literature. Many of the recent theological and political tremors that have emanated under the leadership of the Pope have produced a degree of incoherence and uncertainty. Maugham, who served in the British secret service during World War I, cleverly combines autobiography and satire in these interconnected tales of European espionage. Although Ashenden is described more than once I didn't feel the affection for it that I needed for it to become a major character in its own right. Only the main character, Ashenden himself, links the stories, although a few minor characters such as ‘R’, the head of British Intelligence, are in several stories.

Ashenden was one of the first ‘realistic’ spy novels, taking a cynical view of espionage and its human consequences. A resolve to be a giant among men, to conquer, plunder and seize the greatness that he thinks is his right.

Then there are the outlandish characters: the hairless Mexican, a rather unquiet American, a woman acrobat madly in love with a rebel that British Intelligence wants to kill. It was hugely influential, with authors like Eric Ambler, Graham Greene, Len Deighton and John le Carré all following the example set by Maugham. Over the course of this book he will find himself involved with a unique array of people, including a strange general known as the Hairless Mexican whose destiny is often told in the cards, an elderly British chaperone to two princesses, an Italian music-hall dancer in love with a seriously-dangerous Indian agitator and "fanatic," and a talkative American who "would not listen to reason.The tales go beyond the usual cloak and dagger stuff to pry into the empty and deceptive lives of the characters, and it makes one wonder whether these spy games ever advanced the lives of their players or the fates of nations that set them in motion. After postgraduate study in the Psychology of Religion with the Jesuits at Heythrop College in the University of London , he then completed a doctorate on the life and work of the Oxford Inkling, Charles Williams, and subsequently published ‘ Alchemy and Integration- A study of the Life of writing of Charles Williams.
