Next we put it to the test with a mixed green juice and some tough ingredients. We juiced ginger, celery, broccoli, parsley, apple and pear. The apple and pear had to be cut up to fit in the feed chute, but the celery stalks could be fed in whole. It didn’t struggle with any of these ingredients, making another clear juice although it did contain a small amount of very fine pulp and there was a small amount of froth on top too. With a yield of 72% it processed these tough ingredients well with minimal waste. At the end of the day, only you can make the decision of which juicer is best for you. Based on the other juicers I’ve used, there aren’t any that I would recommend with the same confidence as Nama juicers, but there are other alternatives based on your needs or in case you decide to save up for a juicer: The Nama J1 Cold Press juicer

The Nama J2 is one of the heaviest, bulkiest, and tallest juicers I’ve reviewed, weighing 12.1 lbs/5.5kg and measuring 9.8 x 9 x 17.7 inches/24.9 x 22.9 x 45.1cm.Yet it's also one of the most attractive, combining a modern-looking base and mechanisms with a retro, 1970s ribber plastic hopper. The term “slow” in slow juicer is a bit misleading. If I knew nothing about juicing and juicers, I would think this meant that the juicing process will take me a very long time. But it’s used in contrast to centrifugal juicers that operate with a very fast motor and the difference in speed is minimal. Above the chamber is a tall hopper with a ribbed design where the fruit is held. It’s this hopper that gives the Nama J2 its height, but it’s also what sets the Nama J2 apart from the majority of other juicers I’ve tried. Instead, the hopper allows you to layer your ingredients –with the softest ingredients at the bottom and the hardest at the top to weigh everything down – to create multi-fruit and veg juices with minimum effort. You don't even need to peel them if you don't want to, although depending on the fruit and veg you're using, the results can vary if you leave the skin on. For instance, if you leave the skin on oranges, it dulls the flavor of the juice somewhat, yet if you leave the skin on pears and apples, it makes no noticeable difference to the final results.

Does that mean it's bad? No. Most certainly not. It is definitely a good juicer in spite of that result and if you've already bought one there's no need to worry, you haven't wasted your money. However, as per our analysis, it has 2 key weaknesses that put it behind the Hurom H400. Namely its parts warranty and juicing mechanism.I’ve used this juicer more than a dozen times during my testing and have never experienced a bad batch of juice. Not a single bit of pulp has made its way into my drinks; there is minimal foam and having the perfect-sized plastic containers to catch the juice and pulp makes the whole process convenient.

It comes with a sorbet attachment, so we tried it out using a berry and yogurt sorbet recipe from the included recipe book. Initially the sorbet came out looking dry, with the berries and yogurt not fully mixed, but after a minute of standing and a good stir, it turned into a tasty healthy dessert that took very little time to prepare. One of the standout features of the Nama J2 is its ability to get a high yield out of your fruit and veg with minimum effort. Thanks to its large hopper, you don’t have to chop your juice or smoothie ingredients into small pieces, as is the case with the majority of juicers I've tried. Save time making large batches of juice for a family or for the week. You can easily prep your next juice while your juicer is doing the work. The brand claims this preserves more nutrients and makes the juices healthier and more flavoursome. I can’t vouch for the former, but I can vouch for just how tasty and fresh all the juices I make with the Nama J2 are. I used the J1 for years before switching to the J2 and was extremely happy with it. Think of the Nama J2 Juicer like an extra cozy seat you’d pay more for at the movie theater and the J1 as a slightly less cozy seat in the same row. You’re still seeing the same movie, but if you have the extra money, then the cozy seat is always a nice upgrade.

The third tier is a large, tall hopper. This is where you layer your fruit and vegetables ahead of juicer or making smoothies. It's this hopper that gives the Nama J2 its height, and its large size is what lets you make large batches of juices containing multiple ingredients. Thirdly, the Nama J2's slow speed creates minimal foam and froth which enhances the flavor of the juice and makes it taste clean and fresh.This slower speed does mean that it took almost a minute – 58 seconds – to extract the juice from a single apple, but it did so with very little noise, measuring an average of just 64 dB, which is about the equivalent of a normal conversation. Starting with the Hurom H400, it is much faster to clean but matches the J2 in juice quality and yields. The Hurom H400 uses more up-to-date technology compared to the Nama J2, and its advantages extend beyond technology to include the actual design. The Hurom H400 is sleek, compact, and overall more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The juicer comes with a three-tier system. The first tier consists of its wide, bulky base where its motor and power dial is found. This dial can be set to On, Off, and Reverse. As soon as you close it again, it automatically starts juicing again (unless you manually turn it off first). I find this very handy while juicing as I can easily add a few extra ingredients I may have forgotten, without having to manually turn the juicer off and on each time.

We tried out several juices in the Nama Vitality 5800, first off orange juice. Oranges need to be peeled and broken into smaller segments so they’ll fit into the feed chute. From 1.47lb / 667g oranges we got 0.13 gallon / 499 ml juice which is a good yield of almost 75%, meaning only 25% of the oranges ended up in the waste pulp container. The orange juice was very clear and smooth with absolutely no froth at all, an impressive result.

If, on the other hand, you don’t mind spending a few extra minutes cutting up veggies and adding them to the juicer one at a time, or you’re looking for a slightly more affordable option, or you know that making sorbet is something you’ll want to do frequently (and you don’t have a food processor you could use instead), then the J1 will make juice that’s just as amazing.
