The Lost is an intriguing if not entirely satisfying introduction, but it’s sparked enough interest to make me want to know more about Jonah Colley, which bodes well for the future. This is the 6th book with the central character of Doctor David Hunter but as with other similar books, it is perfectly suited to read as a standalone. The story centres around St Jude's hospital in North London which has lain empty and derelict for several years awaiting demolition. Slowly rotting, it has become a haven for outcasts, addicts and dealers. David Hunter is a forensic anthropologist and is called into the hospital by the police when workmen discover a partially mummified skeleton in a loft, whom they soon discover was a young pregnant woman. I do not intend to read anymore of the series. The was very little in the book that I found to be redeeming and I simply do not care about the characters and do not care what will happen to them.

Exploring the relationship between Jonah and his former wife intensifies the emotion; their lives have taken different paths since the disappearance of their son. Both were affected by the terrible loss. Chrissie, who blamed Jonah, appears harsh at first but our attitude towards her softens and we feel her pain. Jonah’s relationship with Gavin, meanwhile, is complicated as is his obsession with Owen Stokes, a suspect in his son’s disappearance; all add facets to his character. Die Charaktere waren für mich undurchschaubar. Ich mochte Jonah als Protagonist sehr gerne, aber bin der Meinung, dass er sich ziemlich oft dämlich angestellt hat. Ich finde, es ist dem Autor gelungen, dass Jonah mehrfach an seine Grenzen gerät, aber hin und wieder wirkte er mehr als nur hilflos. Im Prinzip hat Jonah nichts alleine auf die Reihe bekommen und ordentlich in seinem Job versagt. Besonders unterhaltsam waren für mich die Dialoge zwischen Jonah und dem Polizisten. Beide harmonierten auf humorvolle Weise miteinander. Ich kann mir jedoch vorstellen, dass diese Dialoge manchen Lesern nicht gefallen könnte. Yes, the ending did piss me off a bit. Once I got over my frustration, it turned out the ending was the best written and most interesting part of the book. Sure, there was forensics but it felt as if it was written by someone who read about it not someone who has used it in practice. The ending has some excellent confrontations, chases and poor decisions. It made a disappointing read a bearable read. That being said this book is highly predictable until we get down to the last 10 per cent. I literally figured out the better part of the crime be the halfway point and was not immensely flabbergasted by anything that came after. If you trust in well-tested formulas and can't take too much action anyway, I'd say go for it. If anything I've just said is rubbing you the wrong way, I'm positive you can find something in your library more worthy of your attention. Das düstere verlassene Krankenhaus mit seinem Labyrinth von Gängen ist jedenfalls gut in Szene gesetzt. Man kann sich dieses Areal wirklich bildlich gut vorstellen.

It has taken me a while to get around to reviewing this one. The main reason is that I have been trying to think of something interesting to say about my experience. Problem is, there is not much interesting content to discuss. The Lost is the first book that I read by the international bestselling author and it won’t be my last. After reading The Lost I’m following the author closely for his next release. Was mir nicht gefiel, war die Nebenhandlung mit einer Protagonistin aus einem älteren Fall. Damit war ich nicht ganz so einverstanden. Das hätte man ruhig weglassen können. Dadurch wurde das Hörbuch einfach nur etwas in die Länge gezogen. Spannender wurde es deswegen leider nicht.Die Verlorenen’ ist der Auftakt einer neuen Reihe des Autors. Mit der ‘David Hunter’ Reihe konnte er mich bereits sehr begeistern, daher war für mich glasklar, dass ich auch der neuen Reihe eine Chance gebe. Und ich habe es nicht bereut.

Ich freute mich auf einen neuen Krimi mit Hunter, der mir aus früheren Bänden sympathisch und interessant in Erinnerung war. Das bleibt auch bei diesem Buch so, jedoch wird es leider von den permanenten Querelen zwischen Haupt- und Nebencharakteren massiv überschattet - ein forensischer Taphonom verärgert Hunter, Hunter verärgert seine Auftraggeber bei der Polizei, ein frustrierter Bauunternehmer verärgert alle.The Lost is a dark and addictive read that leads to a tense and gripping conclusion. There are enough murders to satisfy a hardened crime fan but none so gory that anyone could be put off. I do love to be in at the start of a new series and this is one I shall follow with interest. Zwar brachten sie ihre Beine toll zur Geltung, aber der Preis dafür war hoch.“ I don’t think there are many crime fiction fans who don’t get fascinated by the forensic details and this author does those in a complex yet highly accessible and absorbing way, the heart around which the rest of the story builds.
